Ignition coil

My 96 Explorer is not getting the gas mileage it should. Also it seems to run much better when it is cool. Is it possible the coil is getting week and not producing the proper charge to the plugs. If no, what should I investigate next?

Have the pre cat O2 sensors been replaced? They're good for around 120,000 miles. If they're not functioning properly it will adversely effect fuel economy. Check your exhaust pipe tip. Is it black and sooty?
