ignition wiring

Looking to tie in an aftermarket gps to the ignition instead of on the "always on" cigarette/accessory lighter. Any quick tips about where to connect to? wire colors a big help 2006 Explorer XLS

Have you thought of wiring it into the back of a seat heater swith. and yes you can have it on without turning the seat heater on, same with the adjutable pedal switch

ignition is white/orange and accessory is purple/green. both can be found in a harness under the drivers dash going to the ignition cylinder. make sure you leave the cigarette lighter plug of the gps intact and get a female cigarette lighter socket to plug it into and tie into the ignition or accessory. most gps plugs have resistors in them that make only about 5v go to the unit. if you put 12v straight to the gps unit you have a good chance of frying it.

watch the volts

be careful when you hook it up. I tried with my garmin and blew it runs on 5 volts not 12. There was a circuit in cig lighter plug that I didn't know about. Lucky for me garmin stands by their products and sent me a new one.

Go to an auto parts store ask for a piggy bak for your fuse. It plugs in like a fuse but has a pigtail coming off it. They are around $5 i think. Then run a wire to your fuse box and your set. Much cleaner than splicing in. (i find that over time splices cause problems) Look in your manual it will tell you which fuse to tap into. Radio will work i think!

Go to your local Besy Buy (or most stores that sell electronics) pick up an adapter that goes from 1 male cig. lighter plug to 2 female sockets (unless they have a 1 to 1 socket, but i have never seen any). Cut off one of the female ends, hard wire it to your accessory wire at the ignition harness (wire color listed above) Place a fuse inline with your power wire. Plug your gps unit into this and wire tie it under the dash and route your wires. This is how any professional shop would do it. Placing fuse taps or wrapping wire around fuses starts to look ghetto rigged like a 12 year old does it.

If a splice comes un-done your doing something wrong. In my 10 year career in the professional installation business i have never once seen a splice come un-done.

i'm refreshing an old thread - but have some questions on this topic.

i purchased a 3 female socket to 1 plug accessory outlet (this part) and have hidden it under the dash on the drivers side. my gps male plug is currently plugged into one of the sockets, and also my sirius radio male plug is as well. Right now I have to still plug in the adapter's cord to the socket in my center console.

I would like to cut off the plug from the adapter and hard wire it to a source that will turn off with the ignition (the "always on" outlets are a PITA). What size fuse will i need to install in the line once I cut it (using http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102781"]this part?), before I splice it into the purple/green accessory line? I've been searching all afternoon but must be missing it.

I stole the power for my Garmin and Escort right off of the Homelink power wires in the overhead councel. Approx 30 minutes after exit the power gets shut off by the truck and it all powers back up on unlock. My brother's '02 does not have Homelink but wires were up there. Escort sits to the left of the rearview mirror and Garmin sits in the top left corner of the windshield. Both nicely out of the way.
