Like many have stated, the sway bar end link is the piece that is missing. It in no way caused any of the damage to the wheel. What happened to the wheel is RUST. The design of that particular wheel is a standard steel rim with a chrome overlay on the face. The poor design will allow dirt/salt/moisture to get trapped between the wheel and the chrome, where it sits and eats away at the steel. After a few years of corroding the rim's structural integrity will become compromised and one good curb shot or pot hole and the results are seen on the previous page.

If this were my personal vehicle I would replace the failed wheel, along with the other three as they may soon suffer the same fate.

Looking at the third pic, the wheel lugs don't even reach thru the lugnuts! Is there a space behind the rim?
(not saying that caused anything, just sayin)

That style lug nut sticks out further than the stud on all Explorers.

I understand thats a chrome cladded wheel but the #2 pic shows it torn completly away, and the one that shows the wheel shows a shin finish and there are no marks in the dirt where it was set down ,,this dude is laughing as we all tend to this. he should be blocked

So, it never occured to you that the vehicle was towed from the side of the road where it exploded? And, if you read the entire thread, the OP tells you that the vehicle was in fact towed to their home, where the pictures were taken.

I'll upload more pics tomorrow once the sun comes up. And yes, it did rain after the incident (which occurred 12/24/09). Maryland still had a significant amount of snow left when it was towed back to my house. Then it rained almost all of Christmas and the day after. I'm just happy tomorrow is Monday so the shops will finally open, not that I'm looking forward to this bill. I'm actually relieved I didn't do more damage, otherwise I might not bother to have it fixed.

even on a roll back lets just put it all into prospective, no dirt on the rotor and why would someone secure a portion of the torn steal wheel and that have no dirt on it , WELL WAIT unless it got life flighted in then ill budge. Lets see more pics. IM JUST GLAD HE IS OK !

Dude, if you are going to try and call troll on somebody, at least try to make yourself look smart. Learn how to spell, capitalize, and punctuate correctly.

How about the fact that when it was dropped off there was a significant amount of snow on the ground, then it rained on it for the next 3 days? I think that since it was set down by a tow truck. (im gonna go out on a limb here and say that the front was in the air when being towed) Then it sat for 3 days getting rained on, that that event just MIGHT wash away all that dirt that was on the piece left behind by the rim seperation? Since all this was in the thread....I dunno if a helicopter would be necessary for that.

look at the two dif types of metals, one is shaded bronze, matches the HOLLANDER number for that wheel and the other is the steel wheel behind it. NO match of what is sitting in that yard where the truck is.

I hate to admit it, but he is right!
I didn't look at the pic of what was left of the rim, only the carnage on the truck.
If you look at the two pictures side by side, the piece on the truck is:
A: A different metal
B: If you play "jigsaw puzzle" with the two seperate pieces, they dont fit.
I apologize.
(Looks around for that annoying Irish guy with the dipstick)

What are you people talking about? That portion is from the rim, the center came with it.. and the metal you guys see are the backing from the rim.. they didn't coat the rear with whatever color that is.. why are you guys doubting someones misfortune?.. the rim kinda split. If you're talking about the center where the lugs are, even my rims are a dull metal color in that area. And BTW... the OP is a woman.

Now REALLY look at these. They do not match up! Look closely at the hub area and how much goes beyond the lugnut area. Trust me, two seperate events.

Maybe HE only played a women online???

Agreed. The piece still attached to the hub would have been on the back of the rim. Perhaps a picture of the back of the rim would help clarify.

I see what you guys are talking about now, but there's still a possibility of a break happening... see how it comes out from the lug area.. is it possible a break could have occured between the "face" of the lug nut holes, and the outer face of the rim? Plus crashing n whatnot... losing the "middle" peices in the process to see the connection? And as for a HE posing as a woman online... always possible... but this is a lot of bs to go through filling out everything on a myspace to pose as a woman. If you guys are right, I'll owe ya a beer.. lol.. I'm not 100% familier with this type of rim, but I do know if this happened to my rim... the center would look familier in regards to the color... but probably not the break points... it is odd, I'll give ya that... lets see what the OP has to say...

I dont think a pic from the back would be necessary. Look again, if that rim "split" somehow down the middle of the steel, it would bend a hell of alot more backwards when it hit the ground and be thinner. Look at whats left on the truck and the thickness of the steel. The one on the truck failed out further from the hub. The on the truck is a steel "spare tire" wheel, the other is a chromed over steel wheel.
Sharp eye of the day award goes to 5.0LTR.EDDIE.

So why is this person posting a bogus problem?.. First time I've seen this...
