:( The knocking/ticking has gotten progressively worse! Mechanic in the neighborhood suggested I can only change to a thicker oil and hope for the best and expect the worse! It sounds like a rod is bent and banging on something. The noise definetly is worse coming from the underside. Here's a link, the camera phone pics are bad but the idea is to hear how bad it is. So tell me how bad is it? Rebuild /New engine in my future? From Under.....http://media.putfile.com/Im-screwed-30 Lil throttle speeds up the knock http://media.putfile.com/doesnt-sound-any-better http://media.putfile.com/-knock-of-doom-

rebuild if you can deal with it now, if you keep driving it, its going to shoot a piston through the block and need replacement

If I find the offending piston or rod would just replacing it just be a quick fix or should I just look into an rebuild? How this happened I cant say for sure..At work and I park in a garage and last week when the valet brought it up I dont know if he shut it off or it stalled out on its own, but when I went to start it stalled..so I waited then cranked it up again and went on about my business, He might have had problem starting and cranked it with out oil circulating properly,it wasnt till I went for an oil change did I notice the ticking...thought maybe it was sticky lifters/maybe timing chain etc but it got worse and worse and after a ride sown the highway it just got horrible...

You do not say how many miles are on it and there are other unknowns as far as only replacing one piston, rod, bearings or what ever. You need more information like compression tests and such. You may have even experienced a hydro lock of some sort since you say it came on suddenly but get it fixed soon or you are likely to seriously increase your expenses for repair.

Is it possible you have a cracked flywheel. Mine knocked like a ***** till it finally broke and stranded me.

Isn’t that a bit off the trouble shooting chart, good find. I would hat to be the one looking for that problem.

Guy suggested it might be that. It sounds like that where its coming from.. I will take it to get looked at today thing is when you pull in the shops they all just want to take the lazy..EXPENSIVE way out and suggest a rebuild.

Some times you narrow down where a sound is coming from using a stethoscope or even a long screwdriver near your ear.
Hay if it is the flywheel it would give you a chance to put in one of those new light weight flywheels and give yourself an extra 5 or 10 horsepower to the wheels.

Xhaust50 is parting out a 4.0 and he's over in long island. Check the parts section cause I'm not sure I got his nic exactly right.

You have to move fast if you want his engine.

does it make a clunky sound, but in a rather fast rythm? It may be the rear timing chain tensioner. I just put a new/used motor in my 99 and it was the tensioner at fault. It will cost you about $700 to fix it, but I got a used motor with 6000 miles on it for $800, so I dropped it in.( you have to pull the engine anyways to change the tesioner)
