Ok, these are dumb questions, but my Chilton's has gotten me nowhere and these are anoying problems: First, where is the fuse for the back-up lights? My bulbs are fine, but the lights stoped illuminating after I did a crappy slice job. I checked all the fuse panels I know of and couldn't find a fuse labled for the lights. The second question is: What is the firing order for the spark plugs and their wires to the coil? My Chilton's gives the firing order, but not which plug is which (as far as numbers go)! Any help would be great, thanks guys! :navajo:

#1........beisdes the fuse...........FYI, (usually) there is a switch that when the transmission is put in R, the switch activates...........sending power.

You might wanna check the AutoZone site.

#2........What engine (it makes a difference)??

5.0L
4.0L SOHC
4.0L OHV

Aloha, Mark

Lol, sorry.... 4.0L SOHC....the truck is a '97 XLT 4X4 and the engine is a '98. I'll check into that switch...any idea where it is or what it's called?

The fuse for the backup lights is in the fuse pannel located on the drivers side of the dash (I cant remember off the top of my head which slot) just look in the owners manual for the location. Mine kept blowing the fuse until I took the steering colum apart and found a wire cafed through that goes from the shifter to the overdrive button (same fuse is used for overdrive, backup lights, rear defrost) I fixed it and havent had it happen since pretty common problem from what ive heard.

SOHC Engine

3 6 (back)
2 5
1 4 (frt)

SOHC Coil

5 1 (back)
6 2
4 3 (frt)

Aloha, Mark

PS.........as for the trans switch...........Haynes, Chapt 7 Part B, Auto Trans Range Sensor (1995 and later models)- check and replacement

Thanks, that helps a lot! Just out of curiosity, what would happen if someone put the wires on the wrong plugs? I figure detonation, but would the engine seize or bend a rod or something? (I'm not planning on ever trying this)

misfire is about all you will get for short term use.
