ECT sensor

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (output is used by the PCM) is hard to find unless the upper intake manifold has been removed. It is located aft of the thermostat housing. In the photo below it is to the left and under the EGR tube and near the upper front timing chain tensioner

The other sensor to the left of the ECT sensor is the engine temperature sender that drives the temperature gauge on the instrument cluster.

Thanks! Found it! I decided to replace the sending units also....got one out! :) but the other just spins in the housing :(

Now what? do I have to replace the housing now?

Yup. Good luck with that one.

What an aggravation! The thermostat housing is expensive and a pain to replace. There's a step by step instruction at the link below. It's written for a Ranger but should be the same for an Explorer.
