It seems that the 97 immobiliser is subject to radio swamping. Was there a mobile phone mast or transmitter ariel near where you stopped? It obviously takes a while for the unit to recover. At least you now know how to get around it.

Similar problem with my 97, but is only affected within about 50-100 metres of mobile & BT masts.
Usually solved by operating the remote touching the rear n/s panel where the receiver unit is.
Not had any problem once out of line of the transmitter, thing to remember is that Mobile Transmitters are hidden all over the place these days, petrol stations, Supermarkets are some of the less obvious.

Strange thing i park my car about 100 meters from a mobile phone mast at work. yet it works great there.must be certain conditions etc.

Hi NW Explorer
Is your system the one button or two button fob? I bought a kit for my 98 and when I went to change it, it turns out to be the wrong type, mine should be the two button type and I don't know if they are interchangeable. If you want another system for yours give me a shout mate....

immobiliser

I have a 1997 explorer with the same problem. Cant fix the problem but can avoid it. Before switching off the engine press the button on the remote and the immobiliser light on the dash should flash rapidly. if it does not the RF signal is probably being swamped by interference and you may have trouble restarting. Move to another location where the light flashes and you should be o.k. Cant promise it though, but I have tried it where I have been stranded before and the immolbiliser light DID NOT FLASH. Try it out !!!!

ps got stranded at Thurrock Lakeside last week had to be towed nearly 1 mile by the RAC before the remote would disable the immobiliser. Tried holding the key fob next to the receiver inside the left rear luggage space panel, did not work at all (has worked at other locations though). Normally my remote works at a range of up to 40 (forty) yards.!!!!!

pps FoMoCo no help at all, no ideas, no suggestions, just said it was made to work in USA at 315meg not 433meg as used in the UK so it is subject to RF interference, tough luck sort it out yourself !!
