I have a 1996 Four Door. I want to put Infinity Kappa 5x7 (6x8) speakers in the doors. Will these fit? Has anyone tried this? My right front speaker went splat the other day. Sounds like I cracked it with bass. I know I am not the first Explorer owner with this problem. Anyways, any help is appreciated audio gurus.

Oh yes, you can locate them in the Crutchfield catalog. Item # 1085721CF, Infinity Kappa 572.1cf.

Thanks!

The 5x7's will fit. Those kappas are pretty nice speakers. The highs are nice, really accurate sounding. The most time consuming part of the whole speaker swap is getting the door panels off. Are you going to use the factory head unit or do you have an aftermarket one? They diffinately sound better with more power than what the factory system can give them. Just something to think about.

I have a Pioneer FH-P404 Double Din headunit in there. And you are sure they will fit? I called crutchfield, they told me no, yet they are the exact same width and height as another speaker, and have a shallower depth (even more room). Would the tweeter protrustion cause them to not fit? Thanks, I just want to be 100% sure before I drop $300 on them.

5x7's will fit. There is plety of room between where the speaker mounts and the door panel (3 inches approx). And they are a great speaker.

They should easily fit in the doors. Crutchfield is kind of screwy sometimes about speaker sizes and such, they have been wrong about some things with my old car (speaker depths and sizes). Crutchfield also says that the explorer will not fit a double DIN head unit, but you have one in there, so they are not always right.

Thanks folks. I will let you know the results once these babies are in!

If I'm running speakers off of the factory amp in a 96 Explorer XLT with Premium Sound, would I need to replace the amp to be able to drive a Kappa 5.25 component set in the front and a pair of Kappa 5x7's in the rear, or would the factory amp provide enough power to provide me with decent sound?

You could run the speakers off of the factory amp, but they wouldn't sound very much better than the factory speakers. I tried the same thing with some Boston Acoustic 5x7 in all four doors running off of the factory amp and I really couldn't tell much difference. When I replaced the factory head unit with a new one, they sounded much better. I imagine that they would sound even better with a separate amp powering them. I have the bostons for sale if you are interested.

Adam,

did you ever get these Kappa's in? i'm still curious to find out if they fit or not, according to Crutchfield.

Ya... did they fit

are you running them off the headunit, or do you have an external amp? it's been my experience that infinity's sound MUCH better with more power driving them. the sound is fuller.

I have Reference and not the Kappas, and I also have a 91-94, but I think I may know why Crutchfield sais they will not fit. The screw holes do not line up. Pioneer 6x8's will because they are custom made for Ford and Mazda vehicles. The custom fit is the offset screw holes. I only got 2 of the 4 screws to line up and it took forever on my Infinity's.

Crutchfield. . . what a joke. They don't know anything there. Like how a 91-92 X cant have a single DIN HU. They just suck!

Hey, I hope you like the kappas. I have had mine in for alsmost a year now, and I love them. I don't see how the hole couldn't line up for the other guy's 91-94. I have a 94 and they fit perfectly, the hardest part for me was figuring out that the black trim piece around the door handles had to come off before you could remove the panel. The infinitys do like a lot of power, and when I crank up my system, I can hear the highs over all of that bass coming from the 2 12s.
