Info needed

I have a 97 Explorer Limited, with a 4.0l and a 5r55e trans. I went to put my trans back into the truck after a rebuild and when I went to fill it fluid started coming out the breather vent on top of the trans. It just got a new pump, torque converter and full rebuild. The info that would help me the best is if it is normal for it to only take 4-5 quarts of fluid after all this work was done. I really dont want to have to rebuild this trans again. I know that it should take 10 quarts of fluid on a rebuild but as it sits now it is reading over full on the stick. Any help would but great thanks.

Did you pre fill the torque converter through the neck before you hung it? This is where over half the fluid will reside you know.

I did not, and I dont think it came pre filled....
