I bought a used kenwood head unit from a friend of mine and installed it in my 92 explorer. I went to circuit city and bought a wiring harness adapter, it plugged right into the stock wires. The truck had a "premuim" sound package so I bought the harness that connects to the factory amp connector (small, square plug, not long and flat). Everything hooked up fine and the HU powers on but there is no sound coming from the speakers. I dunno what the problem could be. Even with the volume all the way up there is no sound at all. I'm thinking maybe the stock amp isn't powering on or something along those lines.

I need to get this fixed ASAP because I don't have any music in my ride now! Also, if I wanted to (or have to) just bypass the stock amp, where is it located??

Yes, you need to bypass the stock amp. You'll need a bypass kit, and the amp is behind the right cargo trim panel.

Many threads on bypassing the amp, good luck and welcome!

Couldn't you run the RCA outputs from the back of the HU to the speaker inputs on the factory amp? Just a question...

Nope. You can get the proper HU harness and run the amp, but it is crappy anyways. You can either run new wires from the HU(best solution), or you can bypass the factory harness.(which will require you to remove the whole rear passanger cargo panel.)

Do the X's have a factory amp without the sub in the back package or no?

Yes, as far as I know until 1998 they all had them. After that I assume they still have the sub amp back there. Not really sure about that, but I don't assume it would fit iun the HU.

Well mine is kind of a funny setup. It has the AM/FM/CD in dash but no sub in the back. It has the Disc Seek button on the deck though. I assume this is to accomodate adding the 6cd changer that was mounted in center console of some models. But even without a sub, would it still have an external amp mounted somewhere, or is this the one with HU built in amp. '01 Model.

Also, if memory serves me right, in '02 they introduced the AM/FM/6 Disc HU. Would this direct swap in mine or would the connectors be different?

I originally had the same setup in my Mounty that you have. The amp for your 4 door speakers in inside the stock HU. No need to bypass anything. :) As for the 6 disk in dash, knowing Ford it would probably work. It would make sence to use the same wiring harness they used with the console mounted changer, just so they wouldn't have to retool a new wiring harness. Kind of the same principle of the 2wd and AWD having the 4wd wiring.
