I rebuilt my "rebuilt" transmission this week. Took about 30 hours, but well worth it. I installed a Transgo shift kit at the advice of a local tranny shop. Seems like it shifts harder than stock. Not pounding hard, but noticeable. Is that normal? I assume it is, but just want to verify with someone else that's done this.

I also replaced the torque converter with a Transtar unit with an upgraded Sonnax clutch. Totally smooth and silent. Well worth the additional $100. I've heard that the 3rd gen Explorers have noisy torque converters and pumps. Mine is dead silent now. Sounds like a Lincoln now. Sitting at a traffic light at idle, you have to look at the tac to see if the engine is running. The fan on low is louder than the drivetrain. I'm happy again!

If anyone is thinking about tackling this job, I'd be happy to share some of what I learned. It's not the easiest thing I've ever done.

I would be interested to know what parts you used so if I ever have to get mine rebuilt I can request those parts be installed in place of the OEM. I don't think I'll be doing the rebuild myself 'cause that's a bit over my skill set.

Yes, firmer shifts are normal and actually "better" for the transmission. It may mellow a little as you drive it, and you might get used to it. If it still bothers you, you can always get a custom tune and reduce the shift pressures through the programmer.

Is this the torque converter you used?

How much did that cost?

Yes, thats the one I got. But they have a standard and one with upgraded Sonnax clutch. I got the upgraded one for $360. I've heard from a couple tranny shops that these 3rd gen have notoriously noisy torque converters. This unit is totally silent.
