installing a new 4r55e, fluid level?

I'm installing a new 4r55e into my '97 explorer. Tranny tech told me that it should take up to 11-12 qts of atf. He said to not to remove the TC and just install the tranny and put 5qts in the tranny and crank it up (he said this will fill the TC), then add as needed. I have since 5 1/2 more qts in it and the dip stick is showing way too much fluid (i checked both sides and dipped it like 4 times). This morning it engaged into drive but still doesn't engage reverse. It feels like it engages for 1-2 seconds then feels like it just goes into a neutral position (I can rev it and it doesn't go).

also when i was at about 7-8 qts of fluid it moved in drive and reverse but with high rpms and just felt like it was slipping.

help please!!!! I don't doubt the tranny shops work i think my issues maybe be the fluid level but i dont know. any help it appreciated thank you

It should take about 11 - 12 qts from a dry fill. Leave the truck running while you check. Make sure to shift into each gear (P,R,N,D,2,1) for a couple of seconds with your foot on the brake so the truck doesn't move. Then put it in P and go check the level again. Fill as needed and repeat. Final check should be with the transmission warm and it should be in the x-hatched area.

BTW, your trans should be a 5R55E, not 4R55E.

alright, I'll give it a try this afternoon thank you. I thought it was a 5r55e but when i had it at the tranny shop they said it was the 4r55e i have the ohv 4.0l motor heres a helpful link i found on here too.
