I am replacing my front bumper reinforcement, bumper absorber, and bumper cover on my 2003 Mountaineer. I am using aftermarket OE parts, but the bumper was not recovered from my accident scene. My question is, What holds the front foam bumper absorber in place when I install the bumper cover? Double stick tape, or is it self supporting?

go to the junkyards

I am not sure on this explorer, but in previous cars the absorbing foam was in the bumper cover and the bumper cover secured the foam. I would go to a pick and pull yard

I don't recall if the front foam was held in place by plastic screws, or by the bumper molding itself.
The Explorer bumper cover has two plastic blocks riveted to it at each "corner." Two screws per block go into the fenders. I don't believe that the bumper covers come with these blocks pre installed.

Then there are other screws along its bottom. Been a while since I've taken it off.

Edit:

Here is a great website for seeing details as to how things go together.

In this picture, I've circle a part that looks like the piece that is riveted on. Though in this break out, it isn't given a part number.

This picture shows the rivets (HM3,) which only reinforces my suspicions on the first pic.

This picture shows the "bigger picture" of how the previous two meet.

It would appear that the foam is just a "press fit." On my Ex, I think there were two plastic tabs that I had to bend out of the way to fit the foam in. These two pieces then held it in place.

Thanks guys. Those pics help. I've got all the parts, I just haven't had a chance to actually unwrap the bumper reinforcement, absorber and cover to test fit them.
