Installing tranny cooler (I searched)

Some filter bases come with a port for a temperature gauge. Otherwise, you could install an Auto Meter temperature manifold (Summit has these).

Does anyone know which tranny line is which? I've read that the line that attaches to the radiator, just under the coolant cap, is the 'out' (hot oil) line and the lower one is the 'return' (cool oil) line. True or False?

Thanks, D.

heres a pic of the cooler install on my 91. I mounted uit with rubber bushings and metal brackets. A cooler is a great idea.

Tranny cooler

First to start, I just got my Explorer. I'm a long time Ford buyer, I previously had 5 Aerostars. The last with a 4.0 OHV and 5r55e tranny that came out in Aerostars in 1997 before being put in Explorers in 98. I was shocked to see that Ford did NOT put a cooler on this Explorer. I CAN NOT RECOMEND HIGHLY ENOUGH THAT EVERYONE READING THIS CHECKS THEIR TRUCK, to make sure thay have a tranny cooler. What you are installing a "B&M" is a good cooler. Its a "plate sandwich type", rather than a "tube & fin" type, Ford uses these Plate types in many of their vehicles stock, The bigger the better!!! As for brackets, you just have to make them . I recomend you do NOT use the plastic push through fasteners they may include, problems have been know to have been caused by them. Off hand I do not remember fluid flow direction on the lines. BUT, what you may try is loosen the lines and look at them while you have someone crank the motor for a second. Whichever shoots fluid stronger thats obveously your line comming from the tranny. Tighten that one back up,your not working with that one. Cut the other where you can hookup the aux. tranny cooler lines you bought. Its simple you want the fluid to go through the radiator tranny cooler then the aux. cooler, then back to the tranny.

Keith,

I'd prefer to filter hot oil (coming from the tranny) to keep any particles from the tranny from getting caught in the cooler/radiator.

Why do you suggest installing the cooler in the return line?

Thanks, Dave.

BTT,

lol, Just now ordered my B&M cooler. Looks like there is still debating on which tranny line to install the cooler line into. So this means I am not sure.

Tranny cooler line

Hi,
I just put mine in, it splices into the lower radiator tranny line. Thats the return line on my 99. So the fluid will go into the radiator cooler first, then your aux. cooler. I had a cool little added peice in my kit. It was a thermostatic valve, it bypasses the aux. cooler when its cold ,and allows fluid to go through the cooler when hot. Pretty cool for a cooler! It is suposed to minimize fluid restriction under cold condition.

Sorry to say, I do not know where to get another one of them. it was a LONG cooler though.

thanks, I'm gonna take alot of pics of the install to help others.
