Anyone know if the on board computer has to be re programmed on a '96 Expl when I change the speedo/odo??

How complicated is the swap???

Nope.

The computer does not know how many miles are on your 96, nor dies it care.
A 96 5.0L instrument cluster is a 96 5.0L instrument cluster, the computer doesnt care if you swap them out.

One of the speedometer shops told me that it "might" have to be re set. Wouldn't tell me how much it cost tho.

I am far from an expert but I guess since the odometer is mechanical it wouldnt matter. I'm thinking 410 is right. When I get around to doing it I will let you know how it goes.

Speedometer

This is an awesome forum!:D

Next question; Anyone know how to change out damaged gears in the odometer?? My speedometer works fine, and gears are available from several sources, but I have questions about the change; How to do it? If I can't locate a speedometer/odometer.

why? You want to change gears in an odometer???? It runs off the same input (in 96 its a cable) as the speedometer.

Are you saying your OD does not work?
If you regear your speedometer (actually you put a gear on the speed sensor in the trans/transfer case) then the OD will be adjusted at the same time.

Are you trying to compensate for larger tires? differential gear change?

Try a search, which speedo gear to use for tire size and gear ratio has been covered on this forum many times

instrument cluster 96 5.0 etc.

Are you saying your OD does not work

Yes, I am saying that my odometer doesn't work. The odo gear is stripped because I was stupid and tried to reset it while I was on the turnpike at about 70mph. That's the only reason I am interested in an instrument cluster. The gears that operate the odometer/tripmeter strip out when us old folks get touchy feely sometimes. One is the worm gear, the other is I think a 30/40 tooth cog. They are readily available. I'm just trying to find out how much it takes to replace them after one pulls the cluster out. I know that I will have to pull the speedometer and at least remove the cover, but that's all I know for sure. I'm sure that it's easier to replace the whole cluster if one can locate one at a reasonable price. I keep getting beat out at the last second on ebay, but I'm going to keep trying.
