I have some lights that are burned out behind the cluster so I want to change them. I tried taking oout the cluster but I had no luck. I couldn't get enough room behind the cluster to unhook the speedo and wire connections. I read in the Haynes manual that you can disconnect the speedo cable near the tranny, but its too cold and there is snow on the ground and I don't feel like getting under there and looking for it. Does anyone have a picture of where its at under there? And is there any other eaiser way of removing the cluster?

Thanks.

dont be scared to brusie your knuckles... disconnecting the speedo at the t-case to remove the cluster is going to be more work then you need to do. Just skin some knuckles and fight it.

once you pop the bezel and unbolt the panel, you should have enough workable room. If not, buck up and get under there.

ok, where is it located on the t-case?

Thanks for the replies guys.

if you are 4wd

its tucked behind the rear flange, above the driveshaft. Its a single 10mm (11?, 12mm?) bolt holding on the end of speedo cable.

if you are 2wd...

im not sure haha

2 wheel drive? Whats that?

Its a 4x4 I'll look this weekend for it.

thanks.

Speedo cable

On my 92 XLT, there is a clamp that secures the speedo cable to the body. Even if you disconnect the speedo drive from the tranny, you have to remove this clamp to get any slack. I don't remember how the clamp is secured , but I recall that it wasn't easy to reach. Luckily, only my brake light lamp was out and I was able to get my hand in behind it. I, too was unable to reach in to disconnect the drive spline at the back of the speedo. There must be a trick to this!
