This truck came with half the cluster background lighting burnt out. Pulled the cluster, changed the bulbs, gained maybe one bulb back.

Didn’t last long. Lost one…then a couple months later the whole thing went dark. Gauges and warning lights all still work.

Other cabin lights work and dim with the dimmer.

Anything to check before I throw a new gauge cluster at this thing? Dimmer switch?

You don't say so am asking - were the bulbs you pulled burnt out? Any burnt marks? How is the wiring leading to the cluster? I had a previous vehicle that somebody added a tach and tapped into the wiring harness to get lights - managed to short out the instrument lights.
