Instrument panel lights are dim 01 ST

Is it really necessary to remove entire instrument panel like on the earlier explorers to to change the gauge lighting bulbs on the 2001 ST? Wow that looks like a lot of work for a $1.00 bulb!!! I saw reference to indigo insrument panel lighting in the explorer/ranger forum - is that the way to go??

I followed the indiglo write up yesterday to change out the bulbs on my '02 Sport. Worked like a charm...took a little over an hour to complete the job.
