ok im going to sound like a complete idiot right now but here goes. 2003 explorer 4.6 V8. you have the airbox and the pipe that runs to the maifold. inbetween the airbox and the manifold about half way up that pipe on the left hand side there is something like a breather or a sensor or something that is supposed to plug a big hole in that tube.

what is that thing and what is it called. i picked up my new to me explorer today and drove it home from vegas (100 miles). ran great but when i turned the corner in the street i could hear a very loud humming noise. i poped the hood and found that my intake was missing something on the left side that leaves a gaping hole to suck air and bypass the mass airflow sensor.

thank you for your help guys much appreciated

I was gonna suggest that it is the place FOR the MAF sensor. Rectangular hole with 2 screws... I have an 05, maybe things are different. Is there a smaller diameter metal pipe that goes from air intake tube across the motor for a breather pipe. I thought that this smaller pipe was gonna be for a PCV valve, but not so, just a breather pipe returning whatever fumes back to the intake tube. Maybe a pic might help?

he is incorrect. it is a resonator box. there is two of them on the stock piping. plug the hole with a PVC pipe cap or something. I plugged both of mine with brake parts cleaner caps wrapped in electrical tape. They haven't budged in over 7K miles.

its not the maf sensor. its a resinator box. i plugged it this morning with a 1" plug. but i still get a nasty humming noise out of airbox. what would cause that? my buddy says iac but im assuming its from the resinator.

thanks again
