- 2002 XLT V8
My first post and it looks like I have a nasty problem. 2002 XLT with the 4.6 V-8. 120K Miles.
Driving home last night, I hear what sounds like an exhaust leak coming from under the hood. This morning, I took off the throttle body "beauty" cover and found a cracked coil on the #3 cyl (cracked off at the mounting boss). I replaced the coil but the problem still exists.
A visual check of vacuum lines show nothing leaking or disconnected (at least that I can see). I plugged in the scan tool and pulled the following codes:
P0171
P0303
Here's the scary part. When I started the engine to look for the leak, I was able to see a flash of spark in the vicinity of #3 cyl.
So here's my question: I know the 4.6 used to have problems with manifolds cracking. Anyone have experience with this in a V-8 Ex?
I'm thinking of pulling the manifold myself to examine and (potentially replace). I'm not a mechanic but a semi-skilled DIY'er. Is this a DIY job or should I just start looking for a shop to do this?
Or am I completely barking up the wrong tree?
