'99 Ranger XLT 4x4
hello, i have a 99 ranger XLT 4x4, which is getting to the age it needs some TLC. i'm planning to ride it into the ground, for reasons that are probably obvious to this group. i'm no super-mechanic, but i do know how to shear the top off a bolt and recover;)

i've browsed this forum many times, but never posted. i have a coolant leak coming down the right side of the engine. i've assumed this is due to the intake manifold gasket. when i get the top off, i'm planning to replace as much as possible (plugs, wires, maybe EGR ...) in looking at the manifold, i'm seeing leaks from the seam in the left side of the manifold itself. images are below. i'm not sure what i'm seeing here. i thought the manifold was sealed? any help is appreciated. it's starting to get wet here, so i won't be able to ride my bicycle every day much longer.

The leak could be the head gasket, I don't think there is any water going through the intake mainfold. (just a thought) so you might have to replace the head gasket

thanks for the help. since the leak is external, and i don't see coolant in the oil, i don't think the head gasket is blown.

i was thinking that when the engine overheats it boils off some coolant, and this has to escape somewhere. i thought the manifold was factory sealed, hence my confusion about the liquid trails from the seam. highly unlikely that it would crack or pinhole like that.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the Ranger section. Could you add the word Ranger to your profiile where it says 99 XLT? Some people might get it confused with an Explorer. Check your cooling system with a pressure tester. Autozone loans them with their tool loan program.

thanks, i already started a duplicate thread in the ranger section after realizing i screwed it up w/ my first post. guess i've managed to bodger it pretty good.

There is no coolent in the intake no pressure either. It's where the fuel mixes with the air before going threw the intake valve, so I don't see how coolent could get into the intake. You don't have to have coolent in the oil to have a blown head gasket but it wouldn't show up on the side of the intake either. Make sure it's not fuel coming from the fuel rail or fuel line which is a common problem on that motor.

thanks for the tip. it's been running lean, which i assumed was due to the overheating, but i'll check the fuel rail. i don't think there's much more i can do until i take the head off.

are there recommendations for web order for parts? most of the auto shops here are crap.
