okay well i am too... looking for some new tires... (bet uve heard that a few times huh?) i really like the look of interco tires aka.. *super swampers*. the models that really caught my eye were the *traxus mud terrain*, *thornbird* *TSL* and the *LTB* . but mostly the mud terrain and the thornbird because i do use my truck as a daily driver and from what the discriptions say.. both of those arent too bad on the hiway... so my question is... has anyone had any expirience with these tires? also any thoughts? suggestions? by the way.. im running a 2 inch lift right now.. so i am looking at these tires in a 31" diameter... if that makes any difference? any input would be great thanks!!!!

STAY AWAY FROM THE THORNTURDS, sorry meant Thornbirds. Now that we got that outta the way...

Ide either look at the Super Swamper Radial SSR, i ran this tire in 35x14.50, my back tires wore awesome, my fronts didnt cause of alignment being off....

But ive heard LOTs of good stuff bout the truxxus M/Ts, and for a DD ide look at them.....

Truxxus M/T's are made for real heavy rigs.

ok.. lol.. but why not thornbirds? (just curious) not that im questioning.. im just wondering what causes these tires to miss the bar...?

They are a bad ass LOOKING tire, but suck offroad, in almost any condition, and not worth the cost, atleast i dont think so.

And i wouldnt say the Truxxus are just for heavy trucks, search for a user my the name HVAC something, had a white 1st gen Solid axle swap, and last i talked to him, he was running the Truxxus MTs on his Explorer

I have the M/Ts and they work fine. Fairly quiet too. I also ran the SSRs on my F150. They were a bit louder, and you could feel every little bump creeping along at low speeds.

Pahelo

The one truck i drove with Thornturds on it rode just as bad as regular TSL's or SX's. Bias ply noise, bias ply ride, none of the bias ply offroad ability. You could get stuck in someone's yard with them.

the thornbirds suck in every area except the looks department.... they ride like crap, wear funny, dont balance, dont last long, arent very sticky, and are easily out performed offroad by jsut about any all terrain tire.....

as far as the truxus tires go, they should be fien on an explorer, modified explorers are pushing 2.5 tons of weight, and thats pretty heavy for a truck, so that theory of they are for heavy trucks is pointless

i just ordered 36x13.5x16 irok radials yesterday, ill tell ya how they do as soon as i get them

Actually according to the Interco rep these are for light to medium rigs. I just put a set on my 250 and I only expect to get max 20,000 out of them. Most guys running them on Jeeps and such have been getting close to 30,000 from the ones I've talked too. They run smooth and are quieter than my old General M/Ts.

Years Ago

When Thornbirds first came sometime around like 93 or 94 they were tested by (I think) 4 Wheeler and Offraod Magazine and ire meber one of the coments saying something like "They get better traction in reverse, which is good because you will get hung up going forward in most condidtions."

okay.. so in everyone's opinion... what should i get?? the tires i think ive narrowed it down to are.. traxus m/t, bfg m/t, pro comp m/t... any thoughts? id love a big nasty tread... but i think for my purposes i dont need it.. so what do u all think of those 3? also... what are the pros and cons to the m/t vs. a/t ??? thanks again!!

I say the TRXUS, but you will get better milage out of the BFGs and Pro Comps. So out of those 2 the Pro Comps because they are cheaper and just as good as the BFGs.
A/T vs M/T... A/T is better for onroad and M/T is better for offroad. M/Ts are also louder.

Personally

This is only my opinion, I don't know where an how you typically drive. I use my explorer as a daily driver and we use it to tow our Pop up camper when we go camping and realy the only time it is off-raod is when we go fishing (and even that is not up to the doors mud.) I have been researching tires and I personally am torn between the Pro-Comp X-Terrains and the BF Goodrich All terrains. They are currently arond the same cost with the buy 3 get 1 free sale going on right now through Pro-Comp. Both get good milage and both perform very well off-road. I have actually heard better reviews for the BF Goodrich off road, the down side of the BF Goodrich is that they are not nearly as agressive looking and don't produce the nice hum as they beat the pavement as the Pro-Comp. I am sorry I don't have a deffinit oppinion but those are my thoughts. I also don't know what your plans are as far as wheels but you may go to the web-pages for the different manufactures and see what is recomended for you wheel size. In my case I am not changing the factory wheels so I am limited by what is available for 15X7. Good Luck.

thanks again! i still cannot make up my mind... i do a lot more on road than off just because my tires right now are h/t (lol) *highway terrain*.. and are pretty useless in deep mud.. as i found out the hard way... but i think if i had a decent mud tire i would wheel it more often.. and the times i do go... i would want the optimum performance out of my tires and not settle for some cheap knock-off a/t... im not worried about noise however.. that doesnt bother me (maybe because i have a strait through glass-pack muffler thats louder than hell?) yea and im a drummer in a rock band.. lol.. so noise doesnt bother me much.. so with that being said.. as long as big rubber chunks arent flying off my wheels doing 65 down the highway, and my tires last at least 20,000.. i will be perfectly happy! so thats basically the reasons i want a m/t instead of a a/t... well... plus they look awesome! hehe so unless someone can talk me out of a mud terrain... thats what im leaning towards... now i just need to decide which brand!!!! ahh!!! so ANY input is greatly appreciated!!!! thanks again!!! (and in advance!!!!)

oh i forgot to mention... im *investing* in some new steel wheels too! im probably going to order the rock crawler soft 8's (black) or the D window style (black) 15x8 inch with 3.75 inch backspacing... so idk if that makes any difference in your advise.. but.. thats what im planning on.. any input/suggestions/cautions/expirience with these would be great too!!! thanks!

ok ok.. well sorry to post so many questions.. but ive been reading lots of articles and was wondering about 2 more types of tires... first.. the pro comp x-terrain.. any thoughts? a little more spendy.. but how does it compare to the m/t ??? also.. the super swamper LTB... its cheap!! about $100 a tire.. and its supposed to be more aggresive than the TSL's.. keeping in mind i still need to use these on road too... any thoughts?!?!? thanks!!! ill try to cut down the ?'s a little more too.. sorry! thanks though!!! all this help is great!!! thanks!

X-terrains are crap in deep mud. They are better suited for sand and rocks. The LTBs are mainly for offroad, they can be a real b*tch to balance. I ran my General Grabber M/Ts for 3 years and got 32,000 miles out of them with tons of offroad abuse thrown in for good measure. They cleaned out better and were better in the snow/rain than the BFG M/Ts they replaced.
Here is a shot of my old Generals...
