Intercooling the 4.0 ohv/sohc with Ford Supercouper M90

I would not run the truck on the dyno with the front drive shaft in. I have the same transfer case and I remove the front shaft before putting it on the dyno. There are about 10 bolts holding it on. If not removed you might burn up the Transfer case, even with the mod. I searched this forum and found some threads along time ago that led me to beleive this.

I agree I'd pull the shaft also, for safety more than the clutches. It would not be good if the TC clutch somehow did engage, best to not have the shaft in there to be sure.

My intercooler showed up from Ron today. This thing looks great! The intercooler radiator has huge surface area for cooling. Im betting this thing will be really efficient.

Down side is, the added height. I want to make the smallest hole in the hood possible for strength reasons. So, issues are:
1. Hole for the SC and pulley (Nothing I can do about that)
2. throttle cable, as I mounted the throttle on the side, it will stick up way to high. I'll have to make a new bracket for this, lowering the cable.
3. the PCM and wiring will be in the way. I'll just pull it out of its firewall location till I can see what I need to do.
4. I hope the throttle body sits below the stock hood.

I sure hope Tims relaxed and ready for this. I have a feeling he's already wondering why he volunteered to help with this. To me, the hood is a pretty massive undertaking.

I think a test fit will be the best. I'll mount the inter-cooler and SC temporarily and Tim can come over and start cutting. Once the hoods cut and we know what to do, I'll pull the ic back off. This way, I can also work on brackets, and any wiring that needs to be done while having a driveable truck. Also, this way there's no pressure on Tim. Time is a premium, and we are all busy.

Disappointing. 154hp. Lots of torque.
I'll be posting the graph as soon as we get over this technology issue (The shop is emailing me the results, but the email isn't making it to me).

Its a dynapro dyno, which apparently reads very low. Also, this is done with my automatic trans with overdrive turned off. Not sure if the gear we are in makes a difference. Id think using a tune that locks me in a specific gear and torque converter locked would help the results.

Now, the interesting thing is, as rpm's increase, horsepower decreases. Whats with that? Is it because so much timing's being pulled?

Anyway, even though the results are not very high, the motor is clearly much stronger than the results show. This also means there is huge room for improvement.

I can hardly wait to get that intercooler installed and see what the difference is.

That's just your new baseline, it's not what you want to end up with, so be positive and figure out what the limiting factors are. You are probably right about the current tune and low timing, and that should be natural given the IAT's etc. Get the air in the intake cooled off, and open the exhaust, retune it for that, and then expect a big improvement.

The tuner should have locked it into third or whatever gear is closest to a 1:1.idk about the tq converter. My guy had trouble keeping it in third, we removed the kick down cable and that's why you see my dyno start around 2, 500-3,000 rpms.with OD off it sounds like it was a third gear pull.
Hp should degrease at a certain point but shouldn't drastically decrease.sounds to me as the rpm increase so did the iat and timing was being removed fast.those awd trans rob hp like crazy too!!!

What was the peak boost? Or guess the graph will show us all that.its a lot lower than I would have expected for sure, but the IC is going to put A LOT more hp back.only thing is I wouldn't think more than 30-50hpwhich should put you over/around the 200 mark.

He didn't hook up a boost line, so it doesn't show on the dyno.

I'm not sure why my graph isn't getting to my email address. The guy tried sending again, but still nothing. Spam trap maybe? I emailed my work email address to try that.

I think 140hp would be pretty darn good for a naturally aspirated 4.0 ohv to the rear wheels. Only 10hp over that with a SC? ugh. So, If I figure out $/hp gained Its not a good thing. I am holding high hopes for the ic. If it does pull me 30-40 more hp, that's a huge gain and well worth the effort. I think I really need to get my timing back (At least I hope thats the issue).

Did he do a afr graph atleast? When you go back I would make sure he does both.well stock is what 160hp,I've seen stock ohv put down in the 110-130hp range , to the ground,so you are well over stock.I think your be into the 200 for sure but me and you both know the dyno means nothing.

yea he better be darn well over stock. Not trying to be the pessimist here but something seems very amiss with your motor. Your current tune is destroying engine performance. I can run even with a true dual pipes and tuned '07 V6 mustang up to 90mph. Not saying thats fast but Im not supercharged. I think your tune and high IAT's are leaving 80whp+ on the table. Im excited to see how it runs with a good hot tune.

I'm willing to bet your only putting down around 130-140hp.maybe little more, cant remember if your 5speed and 2wd,but assure you your not over 180hp...the ohv is not a hp motor at all and till you dyno them you will be very shocked.no way its missing 80+ hp that's HUGE!!! Maybe in a 2wd truck but no way in a awd truck.....mustang are slow in stock form, I was beatn v6 stangs before the sc.200 boosted hp in a ohv equals to about a 300+hp car on the line.hp is only a number, doesn't equal track times

The sum of the parts just don't add up to power in the current config. Like Don said, its opportunity to make way more power quite easily.

I'm sure its tuning to take care of the detonation. I bet I could go with my larger pulley and an older tune with the timing back in and have as much, or more power.

I think the dyno is misleading a little also.think even after the ic it still may read 10-15low.we shall see.what's the game plan for the IC?

Tim and I are hoping to do a test fit of the SC this week or weekend and measure up that needs to be cut on the hood.

This will also be an opportunity for me to see what else needs to be moved/re-worked.

Then, I'll put everything back the way it was until Tim can find the time and energy to build the hood. Its raining quite a bit here now, so the snow should be gone. We just need some warm dry weather so he can get in to the field where the truck is to get the hood off. His friend wouldn't appreciate the deep ruts left behind by driving thru the soft ground to get the hood.

All plumbing and odds and ends are ready for the intercooler now. We are close.

tomorrow is a bust. kurt is doing the ebrake on that sport trac for me. saturday, also is a bust. bluka is going to brandon, and i am driving out there to meet up with him. im going to say, either tomorrow, friday, or sunday is going to work.
as for the hood, if i can whip evils ass into shape fast enough, i can ruff the hood in, so you can drive with the cooler on. that way, it will cover the motor. it might look a little getto, but it will cover the motor. will have to see how much time i will have before i leave.

wish it showed rpm..but what it does show is the ecm pulling and putting timing in and out.or atleast how i see it.i imagine the base timing is set really low also but shouldnt be pulling large amounts of timing right off the bat.i would have thought to see a good climb and a drastic fall of power when the timing is started to be pulled.but your hp does not drop off that fast or much.pretty even graph

next time try and ask him for a little more detailed graph,one showing boost,rpms,tq,afr..if he can,that will show much more of what really is going on and when timing is being pulled at what boost level.because honestly it shouldnt be pulling that much timing out till boost gets high,so we should see a drastic drop at a certain rpm/boost level.

i ran that setup on my tranny cooler before i was SC.i could blow harder than what that fan put out,it wouldnt drop temps at all.it also was very loud so i took it off..i dont think he will have a problem with water temps.i tested mine after some runs and it wasnt even up to ambient.he may be running hotter air than me but willing to bet it will be just fine.

it was in the 90* here and what i did was drive around for awile and did a bunch of hard pulls. then pulled over and took the cap off and stuck a temp probe in the water.it has a mount for a temp probe,may consider even getting a cheap temp gauge and temporally hooking it up and just watch it for a day or two.

The guy running the dyno wasn't sure what the wobbly graph was about for sure. Either the pulled timing, or some kind of an ignition miss. I can't see it being a miss, but who knows?

See all the torque? My instructor had a saying in shop class 'Torque wins races, hp sells cars'.

So, looking at the torque numbers, its not all bad.
