Last month I noticed the interior lights on my 92 Explorer 2X2 :exp: stayed on with the doors closed. Battery was draining. I yanked the two interior overhead bulbs to stop a battery drain. They were the only two lights I found on that circuit. Next day the truck would not start. I had to leave for 2 weeks for Christmas. Got back and the battery would not charge anymore. I bought a new battery and in two days this new battery was drained too.
My mechanic is stumped so far but looking for more ideas. He is young but able bodied. I told him to pull the interior light fuse and charge again since it seems it is on that circuit. He said he had done that but it still drained. I will double check when I have a good day (Bad Heart) and see if it does really drain.
If it does still drain, I thought of disconnecting the radio and see if a newly recharged battery is still powering something else or shorting by clipping the ammeter crab claw thing around the hot wire. I never used the crab claw type clip before. Can you explain how they work? Is the radio the only thing that uses power when key in off position? There is no alarm.
Please give me any and all ideas. Tell me if I am headed in the wrong direction. I would especially the RED questions answered and how to use the clip on the ammeter. I forgot that info but had learned it in a college electrical class over 30 years ago.
This is not a charging problem but a problem of draining the battery when it sits.
