Intermittent clicking sound when turning right. Pop, wheel comes off…

Wheel bearing/hub failure. At that year and mileage I would tell them your calling a lemon law specialist unless they repair damages. And your lucky it wasn’t at freeway speeds.
Unless…just the wheel/rim itself fell off. That was probably whoever last removed the said tires fault.

You didn't read the content of this thread. The lugs were missing, everything else appears to be intact.

As mentioned, lug nuts were missing. Only wheel came off.

Lemon law at 60k+ miles? Good luck with that.

I had this happen with a boat trailer a few years ago. One of two things: 1. Someone did not tighten the lug nuts to spec or 2. This was an intentional act by someone who is not your friend. My guess is number 1. So very luck this did not happen at highway speeds.

The lug nuts were gone. And the tire is just fine. And still on the rim. But will post once I get a call back.

Soo they called and told me they were not for sure why the tire came off. Sent me estimated off damages and they have wheel hub and wheel bearings need to be replaced. I called another Ford mechanic and they stated that is probably why the tire came off. Speaking with Ford warranty department now to see if they can get it towed to another authorized dealership.

^ So they just didn't own up to it. Wheel bearings are permanently built into the hub, not a separate thing to replace. That's about a $110 part for decent aftermarket or close to $160 for Motorcraft, AFAICT (didn't look long). Probably < an hour real labor but two hours book labor.

The wheel did not come off from the hub or bearings in it, failing. That would have to come from severe bearing damage which would cause half the hub to come off, so that half along with the studs through it and lug nuts on the other side of the wheel fastening it on, would still be attached to the wheel.

On the other hand, having a wheel wobbling around and banging against it towards the end, might've damaged the hub, as well as the wheel, OR it might have just bent a stud or two and they're unwilling to just put a couple $3 studs in it instead of charging more. I'd want to carefully examine the hub for damage including play and whether it spins smoothly.

It might be worthwhile to see if you can get a free consultation with a lawyer, but if they don't admit any wrongdoing then you are probably out of luck and now best served by trying to minimize the repair cost. Just don't do that by using a generic hub instead of major brand.

If there are any people out there that don't like you--and can handle a wrench--they could have set this up to try to kill or hurt you. Keep an eye over your shoulder and report any off the wall happenings to the local cops. I would ask you to report this to them as it may be bigger than we think. Hope not, but look at the world we live in today. Thanks. Clarence.

It’s far more likely (exponentially) that they just weren’t tightened properly. The fact that it made noise for a long time, and should have very much been completely preventable points to a mechanical error, and someone not properly taking care of an obvious issue. It’s a pretty poor murder attempt to ever so slightly loosen all 5 lugs and wait months for them to fall off. If you wanted someone’s where to surprise come off and cause an accident you’d leave just one on, and tight, and the wheel would come off all at once when the lug breaks with no warning.

There’s no intrigue here.

Lemon law on a used vehicle several years old is also laughable. Don’t bring this up to the dealer and make yourself look like a fool with empty, unenforceable threats.

Even more important, check your lug nuts every now and then, along with tire pressure, tread wear, belt, fluids, wipers, etc. Sometimes it's the little things that don't require waiting for a shop to have a look.

Yes I did l. I purchased the extended three year and there was a little bit left on the second one. The wheel and the rim is the only thing I can tell that came off. When I heard it hitting the fender. I immediately slowed down and headed for the exit. As soon has I was lucky enough to get off the exit when I turned into the parking lot the tire rolled off.
The most likely scenario is that the lug nuts were loose. That can cause the noise and it will also break the studs. That is where I would start, who was the last person to put on that wheel.

Come on, really?? No way the police are taking paper on loose lugnuts. This is turning into a conspiracy theory thread.

must have came lose while driving if there wasn't an initial death wobble. but then the clicking makes me think the rim was previous damaged from being lose, probably tightened to spec but the metals were soft from previous damage which even when tightened would cause the wheel to click and become lose on highway... idk that's my 3am thought. curious of the rims condition though.

I am going up dealership today will take pictures possible. The estimate he gave me was for 4,000 something dollars. The parts alone to fix fender and wheel hub and a rear axle but were 1900.00. They want me to file an comprehensive insurance claim.

check torque on the other 3 wheels
I hope they at least did that

Well, what's the verdict?

Snapped all the studs off. It is looking more like a wheel maintenance issue. Maybe wasn't seated centered on the hub. Lug nuts loose etc... Definitely an insurance claim none the less in my opinion
