intermittent FUEL gauge ???

Have 94 with 71k miles; fuel gauge intermittently reading empty. Have attempted to stick my hand up behind rats-nest of dash wiring to check for loose connection but to no avail. Dealer seems to think its the sending unit which would require yanking the tank to replace and $$$. I assume if the gauge is not working then the "low fuel" light will also not be reliable hence odometer is now my best guess for fuel status. Any ideas/suggestions? thanks - david

David,
Did you ever figure this one out?

I've had the same problem on my 2002 Ford Explorer for over 5 years now. I've gone as far as dropping the tank myself and testing the sending unit. It tested fine and that's where I left off the investigation.

Impressive thread bump... you do realize davidh posted that 14 years ago? Considering he only ever made 4 posts I doubt he is active or watching this thread.

If your sending unit is fine, the next step would be to test connection from the sending unit to the gauge, and test the gauge as well such as stimulating it manually.
