Intermittent Rought Idle/Stalling

Hello All,

Have a 2003 Explorer Eddie Bauer with the 4.6L V8 and 150K miles. I am having some intermittent rough idle (high/low) and stalling issues. At this point in time, I am not sure as to where else I should be looking. Currently, there are no check engine lights being thrown and my scanner doesn't read any error codes. To date, the following repairs have been made that have helped the problem, but it still exists just not as bad.

1. PCV Hose assembly -(I located a hole in the elbow near the throttle body which was causing the truck to stall on a consistent basis) The hose assembly was fully replaced with Motorcraft parts.

2. PCV Valve - The original PCV valve was replaced with a Motorcraft valve when the PCV Hose assembly was replaced.

3. Replaced a faulty Idle Air Control Valve and replaced with a BWD Idle Air Control Valve.

At this point, I have no found anything else that would be causing the issues I have been experiencing. The most recent stalling experience was a day or so ago when stopped at a red light. The truck just dropped idle and stalled. When it comes to idling, the truck once warm seems to idle properly with but it does get very low (300-400 rpms) periodically during the week. Other times, the truck will rev up to over 2000 rpms and hang there for a minute or so until it catches up. I have checked the manifold for leaks using carb cleaner, but did not see anything.

Any thoughts as to what else it could be?

Have you done anything recently? Disconnected your battery cable recently?
 






Hello.

I have not done anything in about a month since I changed the pcv hose assembly and pcv valve. In the past I have cleared the computer but not thi time around as it has never made any difference.

Run the engine with the belt off and see if it still idles rough could be your belt tensioner or an idler pulley if fixing the pcv valve hose made it better check all the other hoses that go to your intake for holes or cracks
 






I will give it a try with the belt off. I am going to smoke the manifold tonight and just confirm my carb cleaner results. The other intake hoses look good and are plyable. I will see what I come up with.
