Hello all I recently picked up a 94 xlt 5spd with 186k on it for a good price because i was looking into something family friendly that i could use to explore back roads and do some mild off roading with.

I took it out on its maiden voyage this past Sunday and almost made it to where i was going to be meeting up with my back roads group when the engine started to stall out and the check engine light came on and it completely died and would not restart. I was climbing a hill and it was hot out (around 100 degrees) My engine temp gauge didn't go up and I had plenty of gas in it like half a tank still. So after a hefty towing bill of 160 for being out in the middle of nowhere and having to be towed back to civilization I had the tow truck driver recommend a local mechanic in the town i was stranded in. They where able to get right to work on it in the AM and had it for several hours during which they replaced the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure and pump and drove it all around up step grades in the heat and couldn't get it to do it again so they where out of ideas. I thought maybe the problem was solved so i drove it out to one of the places my family wanted to go and do while we were on vacation and it was really hot out and plenty of steep climbs. We then got out of the truck and hiked around for a while and came back and it started to stall and check engine light came on again and it died again. I tried to start it again and it started up then started to stall so i gave it a lot of gas and took off and coasted down the steep grades back to regular roads then drove it back to town several hundred miles.

I am completely stumped as to what could be causing this and how i can fix it. The mechanic thought it may be a sensor that tells the engine its getting way to hot to shut off power so it doesn’t melt or catch fire. What do you guys think?

thank you all for your time and answers you may have.

Swap the relay in the power distribution box under the hood with one of the others in the PDB.

This sounds like a fuel pump relay issue.

If that solves the problem I recommend a Ford relay not an aftermarket replacement.

Cheers

Its really weird because i cant get it to do it again and neither could the mechanics. The only other time it did it to me was after driving it up the hills and letting it sit for a while when we went for a hike. it was still really hot out and when i went to turn it on the first time it did it again and died but i was able to start it again and it started to die again so it gave it a lot of gas and that was the last time it did it to us the whole trip home several hundred miles.
I will get out my Haynes manual for this and find the PDB and swap it as suggest because at this point i am pretty much willing to try anything i don't want that to happen to me again. What can i expect if i switch the Rely in the PDB ? i am not a mechanic so please bare that in mind i am not trying to be stupid i just wanted to ask if it would or wouldn't do something so i can tell if that's it.

thank you for the reply i really appreciate it.

The PDB is right behind the air filter housing on the right side of the engine compartment.

On the lid is a description of the circuit for each relay.

The Ford part should be about $20 and worth it for piece of mind (the original lasted 18years, if that turns out to be the problem)

In the mean time, if this happens again (motor stumbling/quitting) while you're out driving, pop the hood and tap the fuel pump relay and try to start the engine. If that works, you've found the problem.

A temporary switch of the relays won't harm anything. swap with the WOT relay which I think is next to the FP relay.

Let us know how it goes.

if you are in the portland area and still have the problems feel free to message me. im in king city. only a few miles from a pick n pull in sherwood too.
