What is the deal with “Gage”? Why isn’t it “gauge"?

There are a lot of words you can find in the dictionary that simply aren’t in common parlance. For Ford to pick gage because it is a so called variant of gauge was silly in my opinion. I wonder what other make or brand has done something similar.

How about "Sport Trac Adrenalin" :D

You're asking the wrong person here.

The way I see it a lot of American words are typos.

Gauge would not be the correct word. Gauge is a fixed size measuring device that you compare an object against. Like you check the wire gauge by comparing with a fixed hole. You check the spark plug gap against a fixed gauge (or several fixed gauges).

A "Gage" is a measurement device with gradations - tool that can measure variable things - like fluid levels, tire pressures, speed...

If everything's functioning properly, the "Check Gage" lamp won't be lit. Fix the issue, one real problem, and one annoyance solved.

It's called a 'Check Gage' because when it's lit
you get to write a check...:D

Ah go pedal your tyres else where. :D

So I shouldn't use it as a low gas warning? lol....

Yup, I'm bringing an oldie back sorta...

From the manual, it seems as if the "Check Gage" light comes on when there is low fuel (or empty).

But I'm kind of wondering at what point of the "low" measurement the light comes on. I've run my tank down to only having 2 gallons in it and I never see the light come on. In my other car, I get the Low Fuel light at just about the 2 gallon mark.

I don't really want to tempt running it down any further, just in case...but it would be nice to see the light come on...not a big deal though.

It's the idiot light that tells you to pay attention to your gauges!!!

The 'Check Gage' indicator comes on in my 1997 Mountaineer when my gasoline gauge is down to about a quarter of a quarter ( I can still drive about 25-30 minutes after it comes on ).

My understanding is that “Check Gages” does not have the same function as the low fuel light. It comes on if any gauge reads outside the normal range.

I just saw mine come on for the first time today, fuel level related. I was kinda intentionally trying to run the fuel level down to see at what point it would come on because up until now, it never lit even as the fuel gage needle hovered over the "E" mark.

I was sitting at a stop light and the "CHECK GAGE" light popped on with an audible tone. I headed to the gas station and filled up with 20.7 gallons. I'm guessing it comes on when there's only 2 gallons left which seems to be the norm for vehicles. My 2003 Mustang's "LOW FUEL" light comes on when there's only 2 gallons left in it.

So based on my previous estimates, I should be able to get another 35 miles when my "CHECK GAGE" light comes on. I'm glad to know it is working.

There isn't a low fuel light on our 3rd gens correct? Just that check guage we've been discussing.

i wouldn't trust that light to estimate when i need to refuel.

Agree koda, that's why they're called "idiot" gauges. 2004-05 ST's with digital ODO's have an audible low fuel warning and display.

Check gage (if equipped) illuminates when any of the following conditions has occurred:

• The engine coolant temperature is high.
• The engine oil pressure is low.
• The fuel gauge is at or near empty.

the engine oil pressure is low or the fuel level is near empty.
