Amazing forum btw I have been trawling through it for a few hours now, picked up some valuable info and troubleshoots!

Im just wanting a bit of advice though; as in my title, there is a leak that has developed on the front diff pinion seal.

Brief low down ... It is a 1995 Explorer XLT 4.0 6cyl auto 4wd 5door 135k km's. I bought it a couple months ago, all sound, bone dry underneath (no leaks/moist patched on engine block, gearbox, diffs etc etc).

I took it out the other day and engaged 4wd low for the first time sice owning it, and there was an uncomfortable 'clunk' engaging into it .... im used to land rovers clunking when going into 4wd so didn't panic too much ........... I started driving, and there was a very noticeable noise/clunking as the front wheels were rotating ....... I immediately disengaged 4wd, put it back into normal 2wd.

Ever since then a leak has come from out of the pinion seal (it does not leak majorly at all, ie. parked up for hours there wont be a drip on the driveway) it has just seeped out of the seal, down the outer housing of the diff, and sits as a dropplet on the bottom of the diff ..... it doesnt leak as such. I dont know much about 4wd systems - but i think it was leaking whilst the diff was engaged, or could it leak even when in 2wd?

What concerns me more is the slight juddering that has developed since then from the front passenger area at low speeds it resonates, above 15mph you dont notice/cant hear it then.

Im travelling Canada atm and only need it to see me another few months. Now if needs must - i'll get whatever needs replaced i.e. a seal etc. Obviously I want to avoid spending big bucks because im on a travellers budget ;)! ...... Im just wondering, if i do not engage 4wd and keep an eye on the level of oil in the diff, would that see me by for a few months?? Or is it a case of whether it is in 2wd or 4wd its a problem that could get serious? 4wd is not a necessity for me.

Any advice would be extremely appreciated

These are part time 4x4s, if you drove it on dry pavement in 4 wheel low and turned, it caused binding as all the wheels are turning at the same speed. 4x4 low should only be engaged on slippery payment or loose dirt. You may have damaged a CV joint or a universal. As for the diff leak that's up to you, I would fix it and yes it can leak in any drive position.
There are several different kinds of 4x4s that were made over the years, you need to know how to engage and use the one that you have. Some have instructions on the top of the driver sun visor or the manual. If I remember correct a 95 has a front axle disconnect, this feature was problematic and only used for 2 years. Thanks for replying. Thats a good call, i just read the manual, turns out by luck I did engage it correctly, and i was on a steep loose-gravel forestry track .... but hey ho, obviously it was about to go unfortunately.

Good stuff, il look into the front axle disconnect across this forum- stock up my knowledge. Much appreciated for the advice, its a big help to me. i'll get an inspection of the cv/universals today ... check for play  maybe that could lead to the vibration. Thanks
