So I'm goin to sometime this week/weekend install a head unit in the 96 and was readin in the haynes manual that you need to d/c the battery before you take procedure something about the airbags deploying.....is this necessary to do? I don't think I did it when I put one in the malibu, but the explorer is a whole diff. vehicle so if this is necessary, how long should I have it unhooked for before taking procedure into doing it? I'm gunna hopefully have a harnest to hook straight into the factory wiring harnest so hopefully I won't need to chop up wires. K thank ya'll! :)

i dont know how necessary it is but it takes all of 10 seconds to take off the negative terminal so i dont see why there would be any reason not to...

Yea....I know but I didn't know if it was necessary.

I didn't disconnect the battery for mine with no problems. I have a 96, though. I would go for it anyway.

No, but it's a good idea. Just cause you never know. You may pull a wire & not think about it & bam short something. The airbags are ok. They are hard to blow actually.
The usually disarm procedure is to disconnect the - Then the + & let site for 10 minutes. This should be enough to disarm the system.

Mmk...thanks, this is my first 2nd gen, stuff like that on the 92 aint gotta worry bout.

My ex-Ford mechanic neighbor told me that the airbags are easily activated

Not in my experience.

a buddy of mine had a few airbags, we were trying to deploy them with a car battery and nothing, so we ended up just cutting up an extension cord and putting 120 volts through it, that made em go

i have been doing car audio for 10 years and have not once disconnected the negative terminal. im not saying that its not a good idea to do, cause it is better to be safe than sorry, but i have never had a problem.

I have not either. Im extra protective while doing the work tho.

I didn't think it were necessary since I didn't think about it with the malibu and still did the stereo in it while the ignition was on....and prob. one wrong mix wire could do that, and I don't want a punch in the chest and head from an airbag ever again...so I guess when I do this, I might as well take the extra 2 minutes and take the terminal off.
