is custom exhaust worth it?

I own a '94 explorer XLT 4.0L and i was looking to add a little something to it. I was not sure if a custom exhaust would be worth the money, or if a chip is more economical. I like the idea of exhaust for the rumble, but i don't know if that would add any low end power. I would appreciate any responses. Thanks!!

Do a search. You will find endless info on this subject. But a quick answer is yes it is a good place to start. Exhaust, air intake (KKN or K&M), chip. These mods together will give you some extra ponies.

I want the rumble as well but personally i'm going to wait until I need a new exhaust anyway.
if you go custom exhaust you may lose power, the engine needs back pressure to generate torque (i can't explain why but this was discussed as while ago and the some of the guys that know this stuff said so), so i'd avoid mandrel bent pipes and larger pipes.
For more power i'd go with a chip, Diablo and Superchip both seem to be good, some have had problems with Jetchips.

You will get some increase on performance, and as long as you don't increase the diameter of the pipe, you won't loose low end torque. You have to understand that in order to gain from the output, you have to also do something to the intake, like Vibes said. As far as the chip is concerned, it will help, but it will help more if you do the exhust and intake also.

Get exhaust man! I gots myself a 93 sport and I love my exhaust. It might be nice to have it a little louder, but its still cool to be able to make some noise when I want to.
