Is it really the tires?

About 8 months ago I took my 2000 into the shop for a, hum how to describe it?, uh, like a "WaaaaWaaaaWaaaa" sound. I know, that sounds stupid but I can't spell the sound very well. So they said I needed new tires and the sound was from one tire being cupped. I took it somewhere else and received the same answer. Okay, so I bought new tires.

The tire guy recommended that I rotate them about every other oil change, and I have. But...usually right before it is rotation time, I hear the waaaaawaaaaawaaaa sound again very lightly. Usually it is when I'm driving on a curvey road to the left.

Is something down there making the tires get cupped? What can I check or am I just nutso?

Thats the sound tires make. They move in a circular motion and they are contacting the road thats what causes the sound. The more aggresive the tire or the more badly worn a tire the worse the sound will get.

Are you kidding me? Do you really think I'm so stupid that I couldn't figure that out. I may not be a mechanic but I do have a master's in engineering and am currently working on a PhD. But thanks for clearing up the whole circular motion thing.

Anyway, air pressure is good, alignment is good. The sound only begins once the tires have been in their current position for about 4 months. After being rotated, the sound stops for a while then eventually comes back.

Thats a pompus way to respond to someone who was only trying to help you. If you are so smart why do you need to ask for someones help? If it stops after you rotate the tires, then it obviously has to do with the tires. Most likely your alignment is crap and the noise returns as you mess up the tire.

Excuse me? MY answer was pompus. Someone telling me that tires rotate on the road was not. Yeah, sure. I find it insulting someone would assume that I (or anyone else) is so ignorant they didn't know that tires make a sound from rotating on the road. I don't appreciate being treated like an idiot from someone who knows nothing about me.

A Wise Guy - I do not see the cupping effect but it is the same sound as I heard when the old tires were cupped. Is there something that could cause them to cup other than just normal wear and tear?

jimabena74 - I'll look into the shocks, thanks. I have no idea of their condition, the truck is at 63,000 miles and I have never done anything with them. Perhaps it is time?

bad shocks will cuase cupped tires, that why i said to check them out... with 63k its probably a good idea to change them especially if it was never done before

I don't think he was saying it in a jerky manner. If he was he would have added the Thats what the smilies are for. He is probably correct, anyways. Something in your front end isn't right. Either that or cornering is wearing the tires unevenly. How long since your last alignment? What kind of tires?

The tires are Bridgestone Dueler H/L and the alignment should be okay, I think, it was done around 50K.
