Is it safe to operate a failing compressor?

Since I bought a set of gauges and replaced my own compressor I've become the AC expert among my friends. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing;) In any case, one of my friends brought his car to me because his AC wouldn't get very cool.

It does appear to have a proper charge and when running the low side stays around 30PSI, however the high side doesn't get much above 100PSI. Maybe it'll get up to 110PSI if it runs for a while. The compressor engages and stays engaged the whole time the AC is turned on - it's not cycling on and of at all.

It seems pretty clear that the compressor is failing, but since the air does get somewhat cool my friend would like to leave it as is until we can get a new compressor and replace it. Since it certainly doesn't seem like a catastrophic failure in that the compressor still operates to some degree and there don't appear to be any unusual noises coming from it, I'm assuming that I won't find pieces of compressor clogging up his system when I open it.

My concern, however, is that if he continues to operate the compressor is it in danger of catistrophically failing and possibly damaging other components with it, or is it likely to just operate as is for the next few weeks or so until we can get it replaced?

Thanks,
Brett

I'm NOT A PRO. But, I could imagine......that the compressor will disinergrate (well not actually)......so, the pieces (particles) will end up in the system (think, black death)......IF, it hasn't already.

Aloha, Mark

What kind of system is it? Depending on your answer I am thinking it may be ok to continue to operate it.
