Hi everyone!, I have a 1998 explorer sport w/5 speed and when I shift from second to third and up I start to hear a whining from down below its not real loud but its noticable, the sound stops when I let up a little on the accelerator, I checked the fluid in the tranny and it was fine. while I was under there I noticed a grease fitting near the top of the trans. what is this for? could it need grease? could the whining be coming from something else like the clutch or rearend? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
THANKS EVERYONE,
Dave

That 'grease fitting' isn't a grease fitting, it's the bleeder screw for the slave cylinder.

The noise you described sounds more like a bad u-joint in the driveshaft or pinion bearing in the rear end. Any good driveline shop can diagnose it in short-order, and the sooner the better. What could be a simple bearing and seal replacement this week could degenerate into a total axle rebuild by next week.

Thanks you very much for your input, I will take it down to the shop this week and have it checked out. Thanks again, Dave

I had a whine like that too with my 5 speed....2 days before the internal gears litterally blew up.

Could be nothing, could be something, i'd have it checked out though...but i don't trust these tranny's at all.
