Ok took my 2004 Explorer into TiresPlus for oil change and rotation. They called and wanted to replace the brakes in the front ($130) and rear (250). This sounds ridiculous. I usually change my own oil but didnt have time. How hard is replacing the brake? Ive seen it doen before and it doesnt seem too hard.

Thanks for any advice

Replacing the brakes isn't too bad. The numbers sound a bit high though...are they doing pads and rotors for that cost?

Are you sure the brakes even need to be replaced?

Im sure they are getting close. I dont know exactly how much longer they could go. I dont want to change them too early. It includes rotors. Im going to postpone that repair and make sure it needs it. If it does I may go back later.

I don't trust tires plus as far as I can throw them. I had a car that I had them out tires on. They told me by breaks in the front were about gone.

Funny. I drove the car a year putting 12k miles in a lot of stop & go trafic before they needed to be changed.

try checking the rotors and pads first, if anything you can turn the rotors.

Yeah, that's definitely a bit high, rear should cost less than front too. As the rear pads and rotors are generally a bit smaller than the front. I know that my pads and rotors definitely cost me quite a bit more for the front. Brakes aren't too bad at all. You don't say what year yours is, but if you've got 4 wheel disc then you're pretty well set as long as your parking brake hasn't broken. I had a helluva time with the scratcher up front, but the rear was super easy if I would've just realized that I set the pads in the holder first then put the caliper on. I got used to the old brakes that I had to mount to the caliper first and then install on the rotor.

I bought the Powerslot and Hawk combo, so it cost over $300 up front and around $300 for the rear. I know it was less, just been a while. Your rear brakes should last longer than your front because the front does most of the braking.

I had a similar situation at Farm & Fleet once. I went to get new tires installed and they told me that I had bad ball joints and my sway bar links needed replaced. Funny thing is - I just replaced the one side about six months before going in there. And about a month or two later that one ended up loose and broke. It's sad how greedy people are. I know commission and whatnot, but jeez, come on I just dropped $650 on tires, I don't have another $800 to fix that crap too. And even if they were bad, I'd do it myself, did you not notice that I installed my own muffler? Smaller independent shops are usually better because their employees aren't commissioned, so it doesn't really matter whether or not they do however much work. Much better to work with.

Sounds like the Tyres Plus up here in ND....bunch of crooks.
