Is This a Transmission Problem?

A strange thing happened to me today. I was backing out of a parking spot which was on an incline. When I shifted into reverse I started to roll back which is normal but the steering wheel and the brake pedal was stiff.

I had to press the brake pedal so hard just to make it stop so I didn't back into the road. It got to a point where I was just about to press the parking brake. So when I got it to stop I put it into drive to see if I can drive forward but when I did that I started rolling back again. The engine light came on. So I shifted it into park turned it off and restated and all was well again.

Has this ever happened to anybody? I only have 2900 miles on it.

heyy tryan1977.. I wasn't complaining all I ask was a simple question. If i was a complainer I would be on here everyday complaining about my MFT but I'm not. All I'm gonna say is I love my EX and thats why I join this forum. I joined this forum also for help, ideas, facts and to share what ideas and mods I have like everyone else.

I've searched but came up empty. If someone did talk about it can you guide me to the link thank you.

I have a real complaint, I have a real record too. My Explorer is in the shop again after the regulator broke the window while I was in the highway. Only 14,000 miles... 2011 Ford Explorer, depreciated to $21,000 from $38,000 in just two years of driving. With all the problems together, we have had to take in the vehicle for warranty issues more than I can count. Will Ford give me my money back and take back the car? No. I think people have a right to complain, they have questions to ask. What's the point of a forum? To say yay, you all have such a beautiful car, mine is red. I think we're here to discuss all aspects of the vehicle, even if it has to be negative.

With that said. airdog, best get it checked with the dealer. That is definitely a concern they need to look at. Have you used the parking brake on the incline? Parking on an incline without the parking brake can cause a lot of stress on the transmission and even jam the transmission. With the brakes not working, sounds like a power issue.

Also, just to make sure, it could also be that your engine was not on?
Did you make sure you started the car?

You love your EX? And you have issues? But I dont understand. The internet must be broke. Maybe...maybe...you really can come to the internet to try and resolve issues. Wow, I was under the assumption that you were just a 'complainer'. You are a new breed.

In all seriousness, join the club. Some chap somewhere will spend the time and capital to put together a lawsuit for the atrocity that is the 2011 Explorer. Funny story...I have 49k on my 2011 and every time my car is idle I have no heat. I live in Wisconsin so this is a really nice feature. Anyway, so I take it in and the dealer tells me that there is a hole in one of the hoses and it will be $250 to replace but its on national backorder so it wont be available until the end of March! Very nice. Did I mention that I purchased the trusty Ford extended warranty. Yeah, not covered. Super bonus! Also, my jerky transmission that has a known TSB? The dealer took for a "ride" and didnt notice anything so that is not covered either.

airdog, I have been on the forum since early 2011 and I have not seen anybody report anything similiar. Have the dealer look at it and let us know what they find.

tryan1977 - I get that you have issues. A lot of people do. But please do not hijack the OP's thread. he's not looking to start a "what are your issues with the Explorer" thread - he's looking for help with his particular problem. IF you want to talk about your issues - start your own thread.

Thanks guys for your replies. As for the incline it wasn't that much to put the parking brakes on (for my knowing) but enough to make it roll back. The car was on because I had to put the heated steering wheel and seats on because it snowed this morning in NY. Its nice having these features. Anyways when I shifted it into drive I heard the engine revving when I tried to pull forward then the engine light came on. I have parked in similar spots without using the parking brakes with no issues but I guess I should start using it now.

So I will try to take it in this week after the snow passes and it clears up here.

Just a thought before you take it to the dealership....maybe disconnect the battery for 5 mins. This clears the transmission shift points that it has learned from your driving characteristics.

EPAS is electric steering so maybe something clears there too

Plus your MFT will reset.

Air: Our 2013 XLT has intermitent transmission slippage. Has'nt happened on a hill start yet, but seems to happen just whenever it chooses. Just started recently, engine revs, like it's in neutral, and unless you let up, tramp the foot feed several times, nothing seems to catch and get you going....very frustrating when it won't go, and you are trying to get across a busy intersection. Then all of a sudden it clears itself, and away you go.... Most of the time it's ok, but when it happens it happens unexpected....Dealer I called says nothing can be done if it's not doing it all the time. Out 2013 is a pain, is, has been since new, and will be till the day I get rid of it..... Hope you have better overall luck then I have.....I'll never buy Ford again, and I've owned two previous Explorers that were excellent vehicles....best regards Plum

Hi airdog007. Was it really cold out when you had this issue? I park mine in an unheated garage but have found that on some really cold days the transmission may hang onto the gears a bit longer before shifting. Once it has gone through the initial shifts all is well again. I never did have what you described though. When you take it in to the dealer, perhaps they can check to see if the engine light coming on may have generated a fault code which may still be saved.

It was pretty cold but I had warmed up the vehicle before I left home so the temperature gauge line was in the middle. I never new it saves the fault code so hopefully there's something in there when they hook it up to the computer.

I don't think that warming up the vehicle will have that much of an effect on the transmission since no parts are moving until you begin to drive. The first few shifts should loosen it up. Not sure if running a vehicle health report would show any stored codes or not. We don't have that option in Canada.

Yes warming up wouldn't do much but I drove for about 10 mins before I got to the place where the incident happened. If I disconnect the battery would that wipe the fault code if there was one?

Yes. Don't disconnect the battery, just take it to the dealer. Especially if you have warranty. The codes will tell them where the problems are. If you disconnect the battery and clear the codes, there's a chance the problems won't arise again, but if it does this in the first place, it's just not normal. Just let them have a look at it.
