if you was in auto this would explain the every so often front wheel turning as the rears lost traction so would be normal if as howard asked you selected hi or low this every so often would not be right!

The ex was in 4x4 low & i was in 1st (auto transmision)

Sounds like a slipping transfer case clutch. In 4x4 low the front and rear axles should be locked. However the front and rear diffs will still work so it may not be anything to worry about unless both front wheels where only turning occasionally.

The rear wheels were spining both the front wheels were only turning every now and then so does that mean i have a problem ?

set it in 4x4 high and go back there to see if they stay engaged?
