1997 Mercury Mountaineer
Hey guys, I just bought this 1997 Mountaineer today for $1,000. It's got a few cosmetic issues, but it runs and drives perfectly, is fully loaded, and needs nothing but a good cleaning and some minor repairs. I've owned an Explorer before, and pretty much know them like the back of my hand, but I need help with a few things.

First, my drivers door does not like to unlock after being locked, I have to forcefully turn the key a few times to get it to unlock. I thought it might be a seized motor, but it does move the lock up and down, I'm assuming not far enough though.

Second, and this one has me stumped, the locks have a mind of their own. When you lock or unlock them, they lock and unlock a few times, for example, I can hit unlock, and they will unlock like 3 times and lock again.

Third, none of the windows work, but I can't find out which fuse/relay controls them, it's not listed in the manual.

And finally, the AC/Heat both work, but only out of the rear ac vents, no matter which setting I choose up front, it only comes out faintly, it comes out the strongest through the foot vents.

I would appreciate any help, and thanks again!

I have no idea if this will help you...but here's a thread I had when my blower motor died. Easy repair if this is what your issue is with the blower motor.

Blower Motor thread.

As to the door lock issue...plenty of threads up here about it - you'll have to remove the door panel and get in there - do some searching on here and you'll find almost any issue as there is some pretty extensive troubleshooting that has been done here over the years.

Good Luck

The blower motor is good, I think it may be the actuator, I was reading up about a lot of people having issues with it. I'm going to look tomorrow as it is 10pm and dark outside.

As for the door lock issue, would you happen to have a link to a thread? I can't find a thread that has the issue I'm having.

I had a similar issue a few years ago - I don't know if it is exactly as you have. I used to have to push my key fob over and over again trying to unlock my door. It was though it was stuck on something. It ended up being a spring for me in the end.

Anyway, here is some threads that I had saved...not saying these will exactly help you but they are a good start to door issues, door lock issues, window issues, etc...

I hope that somewhere in here is a nugget for ya.

The previously listed thread had a picture for repairing the driver door with a spring. This is exactly what I did on my 99'. I used a universal spring from a kit from the local auto parts store.
