Whats up guys, this is Jabba.

I just bought a '98 XLT, and although I've driven my girlfriend's father's Expedition countless times, I'm not at all experienced in the ways of the Explorer.

Any tips for upkeep, performance, getting the best bang for my buck?

What makes the Explorer such a cult favorite?

It was the V8 5.0 liter? Edmunds says that may not be a good thing... any thoughts?

the 5.0 is a sweet engine..... many upgrade parts available for it, and very reliable

And what did Edmunds say would be?

Edmunds says in their review of the 1998 XLT:

"Ford introduced an optional SOHC V6 in 1997 that offers nearly as much power as the V8, for a lot less money. We recommend this engine over the other two engine choices due to its great power and affordable price."

I guess putting price aside, the V8 is still better. Thats good to hear; I've trusted Edmunds for most of my purchasing decisions, including my last car:

I have the 98 with a SOHC. I went almost 2 years before I realized it wasn't a V-8. So what does that say about the engine? And the only way I realized it was a 4.0 was I got ready to upgrade it and bought all the wrong parts. ROFL
