1998 Explorer OHV 4x4
i got a simple lock/unlock kit from autozone. i have a 98 explorer 4wd 4 door and im trying to install the kit. where are the wires i tap into located at? I just got this truck and i cant lock my doors because the 2 front doors the key cylinders are broken and the rear doors dont have keyholes. so you can understand how badly i need to be able to lock my car!

Power door lock is pink/yellow wire in the drivers kick panel, unlock is the pink & green wire in the same panel..

ok but can i install it in the rear where the factory system would go? i looked back there and there isnt anything except one set of wires that loops.

but what your saying might be more simple. can i just run that one set of unlock/lock? and be good to go?

Well the drivers kick panel is the main wiring harness.. Wiring it to the rear would only result it probably unlocking the back door only..

i think they are all run together right? there is an unlock button in the hatch and it unlocks all doors i just wanna make sure i can do it there cause itll prolly look cleaner?

The one thing with doing it at the rear is that the wire color may not match at the drivers kick panel.. Good luck if you wanna try plus you'll probably need to deal with the disarm wire for the alarm too..

ok so i returned that kit and decided to buy a hornet 740T question is, do you know the colors to hook up the alarm and remote start?

Go to www.the12volt.com buy a membership there and get the wiring instructions and vehicle wiring chart to install or take it to a shop to install.

98, do you have the big black key or the small one? If the big one you will need some sort of bypass module. If you need a module you will need 2 original factory keys to program it.

Good luck with the install i would say consult a professional. An alarm/remote start is not for the average DIY'er. Especially sounding like you have ZERO expirence in this area. If you test a wire wrong you can set off your airbag.

1998 and up were all PATS lock ignition so if he wants the remote start he does need the bypass module.

its funny, but i do have experience. I was just hoping you guys had installed one of these kits and could tell me the colors of the factory wiring. It's okay, I know to remove the fuse to the airbag system and remove the electrical connections, and turn the headlights on for a complete drain before messing with the wiring. Remote start and simple alarms are pretty basic even for a noob diy'er.

like I had mentioned, was just hoping for factory wiring colors. guess ill check out the 12volt. I was unaware that my vehicle had a pats key. that blows because i only have one key, and i remember that you have to wrap a wire around the 2nd key to bypass that ****. so anyone know a cheap supplier of a pats key?

http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/alarmdetail/861.html Thats the page you want...

Also.. Pats is a PITA anyway, I pulled the chip out of my key (Only got ONE with the truck when i got it...) and placed it in the steering column cover close by the ignition so the PATS antenna would pick it up. I can install Remote start now and have keys made without paying ford 5 bajillion dollars. The only down sides to doing it my way is that now the ignition could be picked or peeled.. and that i have a hole in the top of my original key, since i lost the "door" that covers it.

ran into a few problems. it could or could not be related to the pats system. I hooked up 4 wires from my kit. +12v constant, ground, and then two - wires for the door lock. the colors in my kit were blue and green for (-) door lock. I believe I am supposed to use the negative wires because ford has that system? two negative wires for unlock and lock.

i didnt hook up the ignition or anythng because i am simply trying to do the keyless right now. well after using the quick connects on the wires, I cant lock/unlock using the buttons in the car or the key remote. wtf yo

Did you Cut the original wires or just tap into them? And are you sure you got the correct wires from your aftermarket unit hooked up?

1998 and up were all PATS lock ignition so if he wants the remote start he does need the bypass module.

my 98 ranger doesn't have it:scratch:

Yea on the Ranger it was 99 and up..

The ford locks are usually a negative trigger lock. I still wonder if your existing OEM is interfering with it.
