Just convereted to manuals ok to leave locked in??

What are the pros and cons to leaving the hubs just locked in the rest of winter? Is there extra wear? Does gas mileage suffer? Etc.

By the way i went with the MileMarker hubs, they seem to be a great deal so far!

I just put mile markers on my truck last night. I would not lock them unless you think think using 4 wheel drive will be necessary. Meaning only lock them before you get in the x when you think theres a chance you will use it. Locking the hubs causes wear on the front drive line as well as brakes. It will also not help the gas mileage factor

I put the Mile Marker hubs on my sport a few months ago, so far they have worked flawlessly. As far as leaving them locked in for extended periods of time your gas mileage will suffer and it will cause more wear, but nothing to get overly concerned about. Also it doesn't hurt to lock them in about once a month for a couple of days, by doing so you are keeping the frontend lubed up.

Warn Manual Lockouts

I have Warn hubs on my 91 eddie. I leave them locked and just push the button when I need 4x4. The drive line is fine because it is free to move. It has no tension till the transfer case is locked in.


Manual lockouts are the way to go!!! Automatic hubs fail and are herd to repair if you don't know what your doing.

leaving your manual hubs locked will hit you in the pocket... higher fuel consumption and faster tire wear. Other than that you should be fine... it's a lot easier with them on all the time... you don't have to get out to get into 4x4 mode... I do have these installed on my rig since foerever... and I always drive with them off... turn them on only while off the pavement. Don't really need them on anyway... but this is my trail rig and daily driving happenes probably like once a week or so...

I don't see the logic???

If the button is not pushed then the front wheels are not engaged all they do is spin free.......until the tranfer case is engaged.

Not exatly..With the HUBS locked the wheels and front axles are now connected all the way to the transfer case. This extra drag is how gas milage will suffer. Pressing the 4x4 button will engage the t-case and power the front drive shaft...

I don't think a lot of wear is going on, its just that if you don't need 4x4 then just keep the hubs unlocked.

Point taken. I drive 40 miles each way to work so I don't really notice millage too much.

sure, sure... these kids always want something. I'm pretty happy though that he digs wheeling and whatever else I do... he likes to work with me on the truck... if the truck survives next 6 years withough any major events he'll drive it for sure...

anyways... West Dundee seats west of Chicago, not too far from I-90 West and route 31... on the banks of Fox River.
