Avter drawing blood attempting to change the plug wires on my Ranger, I went to the computer to find help. This forum came up in my search, so here I am. Been a long time since I worked on my own vehicles.
A little background: I have a 2005 Ranger 4wd, FX4 with extended cab. Love my truck. Bought it new. 131,000 miles and one more payment.
I drive it to work about 60 mi round trip.
Lately, have been getting check engine lite. At first, intermittent, and then steady with a miss. Had autozone read the code and it suggested spark plugs. I bought Champions and went home to change them. First off, none of the new plugs had the correct gap, and 2 were broken in the box. Got one changed and couldn't budge the second. In my fustration, I took it to a shop near work and paid $179 for Motorcraft plugs and an oil and filter change.
A week later, the check engine light comes on again. This time I go to a small local Napa store and get the codes read again. Miss on #1 suggesting wires or Coil Pack. I go for the wires first. Home again to change them. Got # 1 off the plug, but can't figure out how to get the wire out of the support clip. Help this old dummy out, Please!

Sure wish I had a picture to see what you're having problems with. On my '93 the wire just clips in by pressing it in and pulling it out. It may be a bit difficult to dislodge, but it just pulls out on mine. Does yours have a clip that only goes around half of the wire? Or does it fully surround the wire?

Welcome to the forum:chug:

It fully surrounds the wire. I think you have to pinch the end of the clip together and then slide them apart. But like I said, I've not worked on my own vehicles in years. I think I can get a picture.

I think you can pry that apart with a screwdriver.

The OEM wire clips are a PITA. What makes it difficult, is their location.
As per Rick, GENTLY pry with a small flat bladed screwdriver. Be patient.
