Just got Flowmaster 50

glad to hear someone agrees =) i've got a 4.0 OHV with just a kkm on there right now and noticed a bit of gains with the kkm but much more after now doing the exhaust as well. i think just one or the other isn't nearly as effective as both! the description of the magnaflow above is about right... nice idle sound and it will get loud if you really stomp it but quiets down at higher rpms. (this is with no resonator either) overall i'm very happy with my purchase $200 total with all new welded 2.5" piping and would NOT want anything louder, i was afraid the magnaflow was going to be too loud but was happy to hear it when it fired up. just so you have another opinion!

dnellan, I'm sportin the KKM as well and am looking forward to the exhaust upgrade. I wonder if your results will be similar on the SOHC? I have always thought of flowmaster as my choice with 2.5 tubing, but seems magnaflow derserves a look too.

I'm sure they will be about the same, its amazing how upgrades have a compounding effect the more you do. In reality I'm sure both the flowmaster 50 and magnaflow straight through will give you about the same sound and performance, they are competing products after all. I went with the magnaflow because it was $50 cheaper installed than the flowmaster where I am. I'd say find a good deal on either one and you'll be happy with it because you saved $$ compared to the other!

i was just wondering how the 277.95 dollar Gibson exhaust compares to the flowmaster and magnaflow

in general gibson and borla are considered some of "the best" exhausts however as you can see they are also quite a bit more $$. while they probobly perform a bit better, don't rust out quite as fast, etc... magnaflow and flowmaster and more in reach for us mere mortals.

But the Flowmaster 50 sounds great. Love the driving one. Also i wonder what it would sound like when working hard pulling a travel trailer.
If i get a FM 50 i'll to make a clip
Ps even with a dynomax system it sounds loud. (much louder pulling)

I'm not sure if I entirely agree with this comment. I've had my Magnaflow on for a few months now (I think I got it back in January) and the tone has mellowed alot. When I first got it, there was alot of resonance (Thus my Booo Magnaflow post) but I got a resonator welded on and that killed alot. But in the last month, the tone has really seemed to have mellowed. Maybe its just the warmer weather or something, but my current setup (Magnaflow with 2.5" pipe and resonator, slash cut and side exit ~ after the right rear tire) is working well. No rice. Good sound at WOT. The resonator did kill some of the throaty burble that I loved at low RPM's, but it's a good trade off for no highway resonance.

I'm curious to what the power gains for the dual in/single out Magnaflow vs. the single in/single out with a Y pipe Flowie are. Theorectically, the dual in should flow better, but I doubt the 2-3 hp would be noticable.

And Gonzo, not quite sure what you mean by water, I don't seem to have anything dripping out of my pipe.

EDIT: Oh, and I have had people ask me if my truck has a V8 after hearing my current setup.

When I said I had water coming out of the tailpipe, I meant quite a bit. Have you ever been behind someone early in the morning, and you see a few drops come out of their tailpipe? When mine was cold and I step on it, I could see a trail of water on the pavement behind me for about 20-30 ft. I think the glass, or whatever they pack the magnaflow with, holds moisture in. I haven't seen any water with the flowmaster. As for flow and power gains, I seemed to have lost a little torque with the magnaflow and 2.5" pipe. But I got even more back with the flowmaster.

Guys, im planning on order the Flowmaster 50 series Part # 524553 (dual in/single out) for my 98 sport. I can get the muffler for $100, maybe a few bucks less. I was plannin on putting it on myself and then a shop told me they would run the tailpipe off of it and bend 2.5" piping back for $50... so my set-up would be around $150.

This sound reasonable? Ive been hesitant of Y-piping it because i see the dual in having better flow.

Also, has anyone installed it their selves? Im nervous about our stock set-up- having a flange on one inlet and a clamp holding the other side... did you guys just cut the pipes and slide the new muffler on?

Last thing;
The muffler say's 2.25" Dual in... does that mean our stock piping (which is 2.25") slides into or over the piping off the muffler... or are both those pipes the same sime and going to need to be welded instead of clamped?

First of all.. You suck, b/c I was told Flowmaster doesn't make a dual in, single out for our application... So now I'm probably going to have to rid myself of this Magnaflow...

Second, get it welded... Clamping will only lead to problems later on. When your muffler shop runs a new pipe just have them weld it.

it should say 2.25" ID or 2.25" OD. stands for inside diameter and outside diameter, respectively. if the stock pipes have an 2.25" OD and the muffler has a 2.25" ID then the muffler will slip over the stock pipe.

im also wondering what to do about the flange/clamp. why did they do that???

Another good muffler IMO is V-Force. Has great tone and not loud at all for highway driving. I can get a sound clip of mine if anyone wants.

Hey guys,

I'm new to this site, i post over at rps.com most of the time. For a nice setup, go with a FM DF 40's single in/ dual out. The setup I had on my 01' ranger with the 4.0L sohc was 3"in/2.5" dual out. The sound was really nice, very close to my stang that has the non-delta 40's. But it will drone out at crusing speeds/rpms. Now that setup was a little over kill, so on my 03' sport i'm going with the same muffler but its 2.5"in/2.5" dual out. I hope I won't lose as much back pressure as my ranger did. My one question is what is the best exit on the x-sports? I can't exit in front of the rear wheels because of the step bars, and I don't want to block my hitch when I put it on. So any info would be great.

My passengers side pipe is basically identical to the stock tail pipe and is mirrored over to the drivers side. My hitch fits fine. I dont have a pic of my hitch installed, but this is how the pipes exit...
