Just Got My explorer and Need help with the following

Sounds like a lifter. As the temperature comes up, the valve train clearances change a bit, and there could be a gap between the lifter and the valve stem (or the cam follower), which makes a "tap" when it mates back up once everything rotates around again.

Usually, with hyd lifters, they're rather noisy at start then quiet down as the oil fills the lifter again. I'll defer to the V8 officianados to help with the quiet then noisy sequence.

That's what i'm hoping for. But once the noise begins to doesn't stop until It's turned off. Then again it begins when it warms up.

So anyone with a similar engine have any clues?

I'm having a buddy come over and fix some stuff and diagnose tomorrow. Going to still cost about 300 i believe.

Also, what sparkplugs would I need?

Iridiums? Plats? Leaning towards iridiums.

PLEASE GUYS NEED HELP!

Anyone know what this is? Where it goes to?

looks like the heater control valve. the vacuum line activates it. the line goes down to a vacuum source, which should be down by the vacuum ball/reservoir. the ball is located in front of the passenger side front wheel on the top side of the plastic inner fender. that line may also go through the firewall to the HVAC controls - i'm not sure which.

Ok will have a look.

Also, p0171 code disappeared and replaced it with a p0420 code. Inefficient catalyst Bank 1 threshhold

Any ideas? I hope its not a bad catalytic converter.

Ok, so I replaced all 8 spark plugs with motorcraft brand. Previous ones were bosch.

Replaced 2 o2 sensors on both bank 1 sides.

New fuel filter.

The knock is coming from below driver side. Any further ideas? I was thinking rod bearings.

After i got all that done, I didn't get the code p0171 anymore, BUT it threw p0420. I cleared it and took it into a shop, they said my evap system was incomplete, my catalytic system was incomplete, and my o2 sensors.

I now have to drive it 100 to 150 miles for the system to reset. I'm praying to god a code doesnt come back.

My Bluetooth scanner comes in the mail tomorrow. I'm ready for that.

Ok guys. Update.

A friend of mine says the noise from the lower drivers side of my engine might be a lifter. He also said it doesn't sound like a knock, but more of a tick. I got my CEL bulb replaced ( Was burned out so It never started with truck). That was a process. Also, still waiting for my Catalyst and EVAP to complete their cycles to find out if my CEL will pop back on.

I finally found my oil sensor thing. Behind my oil filter. I'm thinking since my tick doesn't begin right away that I have bad oil pressure, but I don't know how to diagnose it. Any suggestions or input on the noise? Could low oil pressure be the whole issue?

Thanks guys hope to hear back.

The fix is to have the lifter adjusted
.

This could be the tick or knock im hearing?

Could be. If you use a mechanics stethoscope (I prefer a cut wood broom handle) you can isolate the location of the sound a lot better.

a large screw driver with the handle to your ear works pretty well too. i actually think it works better than my stethoscope at isolating where a noise is coming from.

hey guys, have a update.

my truck passed SMOG! The guy at the place said it burns extremely clean. Well below average. All I did to fix my p0171 code was replace 2 o2 senors on my passenger side exhaust. That required taking out my middle console to get to the wires. After all was done, i got a p0430 code, then I reset that code, because I literally replaced the o2 before my CAT.

My catalyst, EVAP and o2 systems read incomplete. I drove about 300 miles before all systems were complete, and I took her in and got the pass.

All that's wrong now is the engine tick, a oil leak that isn't too bad, and couple misc electronic things wrong.

Also, I noticed when i hit 70mph on the freeway, i get severe shaking. I am running on my full sized spare because my front left rim cracked. Looking to get it replaced, but I believe both my lower ball joints, the rubber is cracked. I don't know what could cause the shaking though.

Any ideas?
