i left the gas station, was parking my X in front of my house, as i shifted from drive to reverse, bam, it just stalls. i throw it in park, turn everything off, wait about 30 seconds, and it started right back up. nothing out of the ordinary with my guages or anything like that.

it turns over fine as of now.
no, has never done this before.

4.0 auto, 123,000.

just did an oil change and checked all my fluids, cleaned air filter about a week ago.

sounds like the torque converter got confused or something putting drag on the engine causing it to stall.

If its just a one time thing, chalk it up to a freak occurance.

FYI my A4LD would stall while 4x4ing in low range when my speed dropped tooo low, they are not supossed to do that! It always ran and shifted fine normally.

hopefully you are right.

i also have been thinking about changing my o2 sensors since i'm sure they are original. that couldn't hurt. i believe i have 4 o2 sensors.

also, i never really had my X scanned for any electrical problems. i was thinking before the winter started maybe i could take it to a local electrical shop and have them scan it to see if anything comes up. i know maintenance wise my X is in prime shape, just not sure about the electrical stuff and sensors.

If you dont have a CEL light now and it's running fine, save your $$$ until they do go out. No CEL = probably no codes to worry about.

Is this a V6 or V8?

the 96 5.0L does have 4ea 02 sensors, and they are not easy to change nor cheap.
They typically last 65K miles as a rule of thumb but I have seen original ones go for 200K or so.

If an emissions sensor goes bad (or out of range) the computer will tell you with a CEL

Now if you want to do something you can always do a full or partial tune up, and flush out some of your fluids, like the trans, axles, coolant, brake, power steering, etc.. This can never hurt. :)

They still have an inertia switch in them? Perhaps it got jarred or something and just lost contact for a few seconds?

no CEL. it's a V6. i could probably give some fluids a flush, but i think for the most part they are fine.

like you said before, weird
