I am currently getting between 15 and 17 MPG, usually closer to the 17MPG mark. I am debating on getting a K&N airfilter (drop-in). Do these things really work? If so what Kind of MPG and power increase can I expect. I have a '99 XLT 4X4. With about 48K miles on it. Is there anything else that I can do to get better gas mileage. Do throttle body spacers really work? One last thing I plan on giving it a tune up this month would putting in either Splitfire or Bosch +4 plugs help out? Thanks

What motor do you have?

Oh my bad that might help 4.0 OHV

You're doing great on mileage. Bosch +4's are a subject of much debate, many people hate them in Fords. I've found that a lot of people at work (auto parts store) have bad luck with Bosch plugs in Fords. Stick with Autolite or Motorcraft. The air filter will help a bit, but going to full synthetic fluids like Adlive would probably help more.

Stick with MotorCraft platnum plugs and any high quality aftermarket wire ( I like Jacobs ).

I've always used NGK plugs and have loved them. I've been told they are the best. I've also always driven Nissan's and Honda's though. Should I not use them in the explorer? If not, what makes the MotorCraft better?

Am I correct in assuming autolites and motorcraft are basically the same plug? I though I read that somewhere on here...

I wouldn't expect much of a gain from K&N, at least I didn't see one. Although I do have the flat filter, maybe the conical one works better. One thing I would mention: don't over-oil the K&N. Excess oil has been reported to get on the MAF sensor and confuse the heck out of it.

When I got my 95 Explorer the filter needed changing. I went to the local parts store and the price for the Fram air filter was $17. Next to the Fram filters was the K&N filter. The price for it was $42. I bought the K&N filter and did not notice any power increase or mileage increase. A month later my check engine light came on and had to replace a sensor. The cost for it was $165. I can't prove that the culprit was the K&N filter but I went back to the Fram filter and no problems since then. Hope this helps! John
