I would recommend purchasing the whole kit from KKM or K&N and do away with the air box completely.

but for the people without the money for a kit, what can we do about the holes? =cP

1/8" and as many as i could fit in the air box, be sure to clean all the burs and excess plastic crap out before you reinstall it.

Chewie,
I have a brief description on my site of what to do. Click on the linkn in my sig...

One more thing. I know this sounds silly and all and i'm not insulting your intelligence, but people have made the mistake before. Drill out the part that's connected to the fender, NOT the other side.

idea

yea the holes on top would be a big no no =cP

i was thinkin before how to get the most airflow using all the stock equipment. now, im not sure what exactly is attached to the bottom of the airbox, but what if u could take the bottom out completely? just affectively keep the airfilter attached to the top portion of the box.

how would that work? it would save alot of drilling, and i think that u would get the most flow from it. it should be the same as a KKM or similar.

Keep it down guys

We don't want a moderator to see this thread they will freak!!!. Im surprised a moderator hasn't already told you to try a search on drilling the air box. You will find tons of information on it

I tried this on my 1979 Honda Z50 R motorcycle. It's a tiny engine (50cc) and it has a breather tube that restricts air intake to the size of my thumb. So I removed the breather tube and exposed the filter. I put metal wire to keep the filter in. Wow what a difference. But I had a problem with keeping the filter in place, and I imagine you'd run into the same problem as on the explorer. I know, a 50 motorcycle has nothing to do with an explorer, but just wanted to share my logic.
