I've got a 97 5.0 Explorer 4-door that I do a lot of towing with. I'm looking for an easy way to add power. Will adding a K&N air filter produce any noticable gains, or would I just be wasting my money? What about modifying the stock airbox? I don't really want to spend alot of money on a complete intake kit, exhaust and chip, just some simple little cheap things to do. Any info would be great.

Mine is on a 91 4.0l, I am not sure of the gain, but I added the K&N drop-in filter, Bosch +4 plugs and Splitfire dual core wires and noticed a good sized difference. Not only in power, but I'm seeing a couple mpg difference as well. All for under $150.

Your airbox is the same as mine, it comes out with little sweat. Check out the KKM and AMSOIL air filtration products. The KKM True-Rev is actually a conical S&B filter mated to an aluminum flange that bolts directly to your mass airflow sensor. You can switch back to the factory airbox at any time to use either the K&N or AMSOIL drop-ins. One mod not getting too much attention is ignition upgrades. Jacobs is the way to go there I am told. For $14.95, Mark Horstman at http://www.performancespecialist.com will work up an upgrade plan for you. I tow, so I know what you're looking for. The Flowmaster (50 Series Delta-Flow), Gibson and Borla exhaust systems can all be made to work with your ride and yes you will get improvements to power and mileage without ever even getting near a chip, although that is a good thing to check out. Good Luck.

I noticed lots of difference. Easier low end revs. Increased MPG. Definatly worth the money!!

YES,YES,YES. You will notice some improvement in the power. Even if you don't though the K&N filter is a wise purchase, think about it, no more buying an air filter every oil change. If you really want some upgrades though I would highly think about the Hyperjet chip. I have noticed some HUGE improvements in the ponys that my explorer is allowing me to use. I'm going to replace my plugs and wires this weekend with bosch plugs and jacob wires and I'm hoping that those will also help.
