Key alert, but no key!

My 97 XLT has started dinging when the driver's door is opened as if the key is in the ignition, when it is not. Is the a sign the ignition switch/lock cylinder is failing? Or is it something like a sticky plunger in the lock cylinder? Is this an easy fix or must I remover the chime? Big deal or no deal? Thanks

I have the same condition in my 1993 Explorer! It just started recently, and if you jiggle the ignition when it's chiming, sometimes it stops......STRANGE........................................................................

There is a small key in ignition switch mounted on the ignition switch which probably needs replacing.

I think you can find some posts on here about replacing it!
